Better gear (blue & purple Uniques) generally drop by act and difficulty level. You won't see purple Uniques in Normal (although a couple of players here have found purples in Normal, but those are extremely rare exceptions). There are charts here on these boards that tell you which Uniques drop according to act and difficulty level. As for good green items, the further along in the game you go, the better they become, but you can obtain greens via drops and vendors. Disabling broken and white items will provide you with better gear from monsters, but as Fozzie said, it means every enemy will be using magical gear, and that can make things harder in the early stages. But yeah, if you choose not to proceed beyond Normal, you'll miss out on all sorts of great gear, and for many players, that's one of the main attractions of games like this. (There are also new bosses that only appear in Epic/Legendary, but I won't spoil that for you in case you decide to go beyond Normal in single-player at some point.)

Alt key = non broken loot, i.e. grey stuff, but all other colours.
X key = non common stuff, i.e. no white items, only yellow, greens, blues and purples.
Z key = all loot of all colours.

I usually stick with the Alt key as it's easiest for me, but once you've got some money behind you the X will be good too as the colours are worth more at the shops. The problem is early game I always want to expand my caravan storage as soon as possible so picking up everything that isn't broken and selling it, unless I can actually use it, it the quickest way to to that. Even then, I can't do it before reaching Delphi usually.

Right, that's how it originally used to be - I remapped the "filter broken" to the Windows key and "filter common" to Alt ages ago.

After the very early stages of the game, I tend to only use the option that shows magical items (yellow, green, blue, purple) so the screen isn't cluttered with superfluous items I'd ignore anyway. So if you just don't want to be bothered by the visual presence of low-grade gear every time you press the button, simply use the correct hotkey. Because when you remove broken and normal items from the game using the Defiler, EVERY monster - even the very first you encounter - will be equipped with magical weaponry and armour. That isn't much of a problem once your toon has levelled a certain amount and possesses decent gear him-/herself, but it can make the initial parts of the game quite hard which might not be the best option for newcomers, depending on their individual frustration tolerance, of course.

And yes, Xmax makes you level considerably faster especially early on, although after a while you'll hit the mark on which you outlevel the opponents by such a big margin that each kill will only provide a small amount of experience points. That also means you can't expect to finish Normal with 10-20 levels more, it won't be that much and towards the end, you probably won't recognize too much progress on your experience bar despite offing truckloads of enemies. So quite soon it can make the game very easy for toons with good crowd control and area of effect attacks, while on the other hand it raises the challenge for builds that fight monsters one by one during the early stages.
Awesome info and thanks for taking the time to respond! Thats what I needed to know.

On another note, we started playing yesterday afternoon, with him as Conquerer and me as auramancer Evoker. I must say that I like my auromancer. I am following the general guide for it, but just added 1 point into Volcanic Orb so that I could toss some bombs in from way back :-) . He is struggling a little bit with the Conquerer with having to use potions and such, but I have heard that is how it goes. We quit last night at Level 8 after picking our 2nd masteries and equipping our Level 8 gear. Only thing that I cant figure out is what specifically gives you the burning halo that surrounds you whole body on my Evoker like in all the videos? I have already maxed out Ring of Fire, and that didnt do it. I have the little fireball the just spins around my body, whereas the videos have a total glow around them. What gives that glow? Thanks!

Gotcha, and if there are new monsters in Epic and Legendary, I may just indeed carry my character on further, even if he doesnt want to. Thanks for the info!

Well, we had decided right at the start to go ahead a Defile the grey and white items out of the game. Every blue moon a white item still drops, but not very often. I dont have a way to compare the difficulty to without haveing this mod done, but its pretty challenging already I must say. We have been using the Z button to toggle the items, but I will start using X now to make sure the whites dont show even when they pop up for whatever reason. With having so many gold items dropping, and basically selling them all, we are good to go on money.

Like I said, we are happy so far, but I gotta figure out how to get that glow around my body :-)

    Heat Shield.

In most builds people spend one point in it. In addition to absorbing fire damage, it gives you 15% Physical damage resistance while active. And you can cast it not only on yourself, but also on your Conqueror friend.
