Thank you kindly, Laurrrr and Medea!

Yeah I actually checked out the Grim Dawn website yesterday and watched the videos. It looks like it's going to be great. I was also happy to see they raised nearly twice their monetary goal on Kickstarter!

EDIT: Never mind; I figured out the avatar thing. Laurrrr: Would that be the Zone from Tarkovski's "Stalker," by any chance?

Indeed. It's one of my favorite movies and I think that The Zone is best shown in the book and the movie but the games are also ok if you like more action with shooting and stuff. Personally, I don't.

Wow, I had no idea that Stalker was a book, let alone also games. It makes sense though; Solaris was based on a book. Hehehe I have no idea how the games would work. Tie rags to huge lug nuts and throw them in the air to find your way through the zone and stare at shot after gorgeous shot of decaying man made matter being reclaimed by a lush green wilderness? I guess they had to make it a shooter to sell it. Anyway the film is on my short list of favorite movies too! Very cool sig!

The book is called "Roadside Picnic" written by Arkady and Boris Strugatzki and along with "Hard to be a God" which is written by the same authors they are two exceptional SF books and I greatly recommend you reading them. I don't know how much success you will have finding them in the U.S. but I wish you luck if you want to get them.

As for the games...well you are right on the selling part but it just pisses me off every time I talk with someone who played them and thinks The Zone is the best shooting ground ever. It's just sad and that's why I don't talk about Stalker with people anymore. Anyway, I hope you will give the books a try and enjoy them. They deserve it.

Yes, I agree with Laurrrr regarding Roadside Picnic. He's the one who brought the book to my attention and it's an amazing book. Definitely among the very best science-fiction novels I've ever read.

And a belated welcome to the community, Nethescurial. Glad to have you aboard.

Laurrrr: Cool, thanks for the info! I will add those books to my watch list. Yeah, the "shooting ground" thing is all wrong. As I recall, the military sent troops, tanks etc. into the Zone only to lose them all mysteriously, before the events in the film took place. Making a shooter out of "Stalker" makes about as much sense as making an ARPG out of Bergman's "The Seventh Seal!"

defboy99: Thank you for the welcome! It's nice to see that the TQ community has so many well read members!

Now if I could just find an English translation of "Hard to be a God" I'd be all set.
