    Oh and another question,

if you choose storm or earth to go with it then it is easier to go with a staff but it isnt TOO difficult (read as "IF you know what your doing")
otherwise pretty much any class goes well with nature champion guardian both rather survivable and good damage
ritualist and soothsayer (i know you said you dont like spirit) excellent petmancers
i havent tried illusionist but hear tjhe traps and wolves syegise pretty well
ranger i havent tried as dont like hunting
storm and earth are good nuke supports for the wolves

    all are good classes

Have a look at Tyr's Wanderer's guide in the Nature section of Classes. It's a good guide on getting the best from Nature's pets and he recommends choosing Earth as a complement mastery, giving you a Summoner.

As someone who has spent more time playing Nature petmancers than I care to think about, for someone starting out I'd strongly recommend Ritualist (that is, Nature/Dream). It's just a wonderfully versatile petmancer, and easier than any of the others IMHO.
