There's some people who DO use onslaught on their first char...but they don't put it on left mouse button, instead they actually cast it!

    Can you imagine????
Ah, the beauty of being a beginner... No worries about game mechanics or some tough boss you know you'll encounter - just sit back and grind till your teeth fall off for some decent item

My brother was puzzled by Herbal Remedy. He took the skill description literally and, despite clicking on all the greenery he could find, was unable to locate the herbs and plants which he thought were necessary to activate the skill.

That's pretty understandable if you've played standard RPG's or even some of the more action-y RPG's like Divine Divinity. Herbalism/alchemy and all that are pretty common.

Yes, it might be the feared "Morbus Elderscrolliensis". In the last phase of the condition, some people claim they would soon be master tumblers for the Chinese State Circus as long as they keep bunny-hopping through town all day. Others report to have listened to conversations like this in a bar or a restaurant:
"Sir, is something wrong? You've been crouching in this corner for hours, now."
"Shoo! Go away, look somewhere else or my sneaking skill will never improve!"
    "I don't need a nicotine patch, Penny - I smoke cigarettes."

Ugh, god, I am so glad I played Oblivion with the mod that grants XP and level up points instead of that.
If the same type of mod is released for Skyrim I may play that game.

Although it's pretty clear TQ skills don't work like that, I can still relate how this can be confusing. Like flix said, there are games that actually have this as feature, like Dungeon Siege II, where you can harvest some bushes for health & mana potions if you have the necessary skills. Although, they did have red or blue mist around them so were pretty easy to spot...

As for Elder Scrolls, you can't blame a game if players are idiots and abuse it. For example, you can't rapidly click your own tombstone to get massive amounts of exp and actually improve by dying in any Elder Scrolls game now can you

EDIT: Also, flix, I personally prefer the way Oblivion and Morrowind handled skills, since it's more realistic then exp - what you use you improve, while exp means you can use swords and then improve running or make stronger fireballs. Skyrim is closer to exp then previous games, you can lvl up with Restoration and then use those points on some heavy armor perks. Not good for me.

The funny thing is that, although we like the same type of games generally, my brother and I have completely opposite approaches. If I start a new game, the first thing I'll do is hit google, find a forum where vets can offer me secrets, tips and shortcuts to playing it proficiently. I don't want cheats, like finding out puzzle solutions before I've even started the game. But things like builds or little-known item properties or boss resistances/damage types aren't cheats imo. They're just providing info that the manual omits.

Bro, on the other hand, refuses to consult any source other than the manual. Games are a voyage of discovery for him, he wants to find out absolutely everything himself. He also refuses to let the game automate anything for him. So, in the Silent Hunter games for eg, he takes manual control of every single function on the entire sub. In IL2 Sturmovik, he won't let the AI fly the plane while he aims the bombs or vice versa, he has to do both.

It's an admirable approach but in games with skimpy manuals like TQ (and just about every other game too) it sure lengthens the learning curve. After nearly a year of playing TQ, he still had no idea what OA and DA are. The manual simply doesn't make a big deal of it, so he didn't think it was important.

I don't know how anybody can play that way and expect to become proficient. How many of us would have figured out on our own that 2k DA is the approximate amount you need for relative immunity from melee attacks? Or that Yaoguai's Gore attack does Bleeding damage? Or that +% bonuses are universal while flat damage bonuses are weapon-only? Or hundreds of other gameplay mechanics?

I commend his patience and commitment but it's not the way I'm ever going to play a game. I'm just too impatient.
