Help! quest log greyed out after fanpatch installed

I just installed IT over TQ + patch 1.3, and then installed fanpatch 1.17a. All seemed fine at first but now I notice that
1.the quest log icon is greyed out
2. the Q hotkey doesn't work either
3. I just killed the boarman in the Parnassus caves, which was a sidequest, and .... NOTHING. No notification, nada.

Has anyone else experienced this? I have searched this forum but can't find a post reporting this particular problem.
OS is Vista, PC is a Dell XPS730, bags of RAM, nVidia GEforce 280x2.

Please bear in mind, when you reply, that I'm a 65 year old librarian ie my technical knowledge is close to zero.

Oh, I did make a backup of game.dll, engine.dll and tquit.exe as instructed in the Readme.

ok, here's an update: I started a new game and the quest log is fine.

So it seems the problem is something to do with importing my TQ save game to IT ...

How did you import your character from normal TQ to IT? Did you use the import function on the character select screen?
You can import a character as many times as you want, so try it again and see if the problem persists.

Tried that - thanks Shalie - it didn't work. I've given up and put all my character#1's stuff into a transfer area in case I want it later in the all-new game I started.

Shame, but at least you found that out now you've only just started and not after defeating legendary TQ. The items you find will quickly outclass the ones you can't take with you anyway.
