I must apologize for digging that deep and raising an old thread.
But this is to most thorough guide for a (melee) prophet and it ends somewhere in epic.
I would appreciate if Irma2 could give the ending part of the guide, regarding the main question - is a melee prophet worth it, can it finish the game and how difficult is it, compared to a caster prophet.

Sorry but I can't give you definitive answers on that yet as I haven't played my Prophets much recently and the melee toon is still in Epic.

I see no reason why a melee Prophet couldn't finish the game. The furthest I've gone with a non-conventional melee toon is my Int-Vit melee Diviner. She is in Act III Legendary and has had no problems so far. I don't foresee her hitting the wall in the remainder of the game.

Prophet should be similarly viable although it probably won't be the fastest boss killer. But until I've actually done it, that is just a guess and not a recommendation.

I'm planning to make a prophet soon, on soulvizier. It is harder than vanilla of course so I'm cautious about the route to develop my toon. I might try both, a caster first and then a melee.

Fair enough. I'd be even more hesitant about giving an opinion on a build's viability in Soulvizier as I have no experience with that mod. I'd love to be able to help but, unless I've actually experienced what I'm talking about myself, I prefer not to comment. Sorry I can't be of more help.
