Quick questions on bow skills

I'm very new to the game so please forgive me if the answers are obvious!

I currently have points in Marksmanship and Puncture Arrows and intend taking Scattershot as well.

According to the chart that comes with the game Puncture Arrows and Scattershot are active skills - the same as Marksmanship and should be selected to use?

I can select Markmanship as a left skill and assign it to a hot key - but can't select Punture Arrows in the same way.

Nonetheless when using Marksmanship occasionaly my shot seems to pass through a target and I think this is Puncture Shot working?

I'm assuming that the chart is wrong? And that Punture Arrows is a passive skill with a chance to work (like Vollley)?

Does Scattershot work the same or do you have to use one or the two/three(Puncture Arrows/Scattershot or Marksmanship?) - it seems to be a waste of points to max all three to select only one/two to use?

I also notice on the Mastery page some skills have a square box and some a circle - can anyone tell me why?

Square is active, circle is passive. Those two skills are passives that only work when using the Marksmanship active.
