You could check the item requirements, though I remember some armor pieces not having these.

Alternatively you can check the item enhancements. Warrior armor always spawn with some type of "block efficacy" enhancement. Rogue armor always spawn with the +critical hit damage (from all sources) enhancement, and Wizard armor always spawn with the +%mana or +%mana regen enhancement.

Yes, but that doesn't show when you see the item in the shop, it just gives its name unlike in TQ where you get details of the item when you put the cursor over it. So there doesn't seem to be a way to tell from the name of the item whether its good for a Might or a Rogue toon and only way to see details is to buy it and then sell it back if it's not suitable.

If by "easily" you mean - without using Compare button (Right click on the item and select Compare) - which works without buying, then look at their names (and they look different). From here: http://amalur.wikia.com/wiki/Armor

    Head Might-Helmet Finesse-Hood Sorcery-Cowl

    Chest Might-Cuirass Finesse-Light Armor Sorcery-Robe

    Hands Might-Gauntlets Finesse-Gloves Sorcery-Handwraps

    Legs Might-Chausses Finesse-Leggings Sorcery-Robe

    Feet Might-Greaves Finesse-Boots Sorcery-Shoes

    Shields Might-Kite Shield Finesse-Buckler Sorcery-Talisman

And I'm not sure what are you buying at lower levels. At the start I usually only bought additional space for backpack, repair kits, lockpicks, and occasionally potions, gear was mostly found, sometimes crafted.
If the money is tight, sell loot (and buy potions, if needed) at Nanni's alchemy shop in Gorhart, she has the best prices after you finished her quest.

Forgot to mention the backpack - you'll want to check every store you encounter for these. And yep, right clicking can opens up lots of extra tabs/windows depending on where you cursor is. I didn't understand what you meant, sorry. I sometimes play on the console where items automatically compare themselves with X.

Yes, that's exactly what I meant guys, thank you. Jaelrin I suspected those were the sort of items I should be looking for, but as I was able to wear cuirasses, gauntles, etc, initially I wasn't sure how long I might be able to continue to do so. In the original Two Worlds, archer types can wear plate armour up to a point, but not full plate stuff otherwise they can't use a bow so I wasn't sure if this was similar. For an archer you have to stick with chainmail or half plate max.

I must have missd the bit about right clicking for comparison when I read the manual/guide, or maybe that's something else left out. Should have guessed there might be something like that after you told me about right clicking for the radial. Why couldn't it just compare automatically though, much easier for players.

Yes, I'm keeping an eye out for extra backpacks, but so far I haven't come close to my limit on the initial one yet. Which is amazing as when I occasionally try and play Oblivion I soon fill that space up, but then that's based on weight carried and not slot space like this and TQ.

Back again with another question guys. What's the best mix of gear for this game? Are the uniques better or is it like TQ when blue/green stuff would be best? At the moment, I've got 3/4 pieces of the 5 piece Perfidious set, a Pathfinder's Hood, Belan's Cuirass, Merciless and Shark Fins for weapons. I'm following the Whirling Dervish guide from Amalur Foundry which specifies longbows and faeblades, my two fave weapons.

Mastercrafted (requires maxed blacksmithing) gear can be totally overpowered, if you use perfect parts, and a gem as one of the components. But such power isn't needed for comfortable play.

I usually used set and uniques, if I liked how they looked, even if I had slightly better items, and used crafted if I desperately needed an upgrade, or wanted to make customised gear - like a dagger with mostly poison damage.

P.S. Do you really like faeblades? My favourite weapons were longswords and daggers, because they allow good control over the course of battle, and you can quickly react to situation. Faeblades, greatswords and hammers have too much inertia.

Yeah, I do. I've used them a little in Sacred Gold with a Dark Elf because they looked good and the same here. Admittedly, I haven't used daggers in Amalur much yet, but the guide I'm following also recommends faeblades and bows so that's what I went with as I like that style of play anyway. I prefer being able to pepper enemies with bow work first then finishing off with close in melee. I've got a couple of Might toons running around with longswords, but they are very early game as I have been concentrating on this toon for the last few days.

Thanks for the gear advice jaelrin. Although green is supposed to be infrequent and blue rare, there are more than plenty of both in the shops so I was wondering if that was a better way to go than uniques and set stuff, but it seems I'm on the right track with what I have. Can you get through the game wearing/using only greens or blues or a mixture or are they underpowered for end game?

I guess it's possible, but you'll find lots of set and unique items. I don't know how far into the game you're, but besides just items from monsters and chests, there're items from quest lines. Faction quests from Warsworn, Travellers and Scholia Arcana allow you to get Might, Finesse, or Sorcery sets respectively.
And it's possible to get a sorcery set that looks similar to the ones Fae wear from House of Ballads quest line.

My latest character used Pteryx Armor set from Teeth of Naros DLC to the end of the game, just because I liked how it looks on female Varani rogue.

It's a huge game, maybe you won't find all items, but you'll find a lot of them, eventually.

Just moving on to the Sidhe area and the side quests there atm so still a long way to go. I've already got quite a few uniques and set pieces for Finesse and Might; I was just wondering how good the greens and blues were against them. I've been experimenting in TQ with some toons just using green items all the way through the game so I was curious whether it was worth running the same experiment in Amalur just for fun.
