Lol i'd say touche, but these are fantasy games, not reality games. These fantasy gals don't nag, they give me backrubs and bring me a bourbon and coke whenever I ask. When they aren't firing a single arrow through 5 orcs' heads or slicing tigermen in half with a 2-handed broadsword wearing a chainmail bikini.

    Just sayin' :P

Any range toon I make in any RPG/MMO game is a female...maybe I can thank the Diablo franchise for that lol

Also to spout a personal opinion & cliche "chicks with swords are cool!"

Ever see a dual-wield female drow elf mowing through the masses? It's sheer beauty lol

But I have plenty of male characters as well, the way I look at it is I'm "guiding" my toons...I'm NOT my toons heh

That said, I think people should play and enjoy a game the way they want within the said game's rule set and the non-infringement of other player's fun (if it's a MP game)

    So to each their own

When I play a bow/spear/magic based char it is a female. Melee/tanks are male. I probably have Diablo and fantasy movies/books to thank for these views. On a side note why do tough chicks in movies still have crying or sappy scene(s)? I want an action flick not an action chick flick. The frequency of these scenes has gone down but any time a scene like that happens it annoys me. End of side note.

After I played Baldur's Gate with a female character (and experienced the romance part) I said I'd stop doing it. It was too weird.
If the game features a female lead, good. If the game is a simple hack and slash with not much rpg (d2, tq, ds, sacred), good.
But I won't play any more females in full fledged rpgs (bioware stuff, bethesda, or mmos)

I totally play chicks because they look better. But, yeah, my melee characters are guys with ranged/mage as female.
    TQ player since demo release.

I prefer a guy who's not so insecure about his manhood that he's afraid to play as the opposite gender, personally. -shrug- Besides, it's always great for a laugh when both my significant other and I are on females, and the pickup lines start rolling in. His female toons actually tend to be sexier than mine, so he's usually the one the guys hit on, LOL. I am always reminded of this:

I have played males in single-player RPGs, but I tend to stick to my own gender in MMOs because I like to play Barbie with characters and the female armor generally looks better, imo.

I play both male and female characters but usually female, and I have a couple of reasons.

Usually the models for males in games are terrible. Diablo 2 had good models but no choice: class and sex were bound together. World of Warcraft had awful male models for humans, but males for the other races were fine, on the other hand tauren and dwarf females were fugly. The model plays a big role and I don't necessarily want my avatar to be an ugly fabio.

There's a psychology to it sure. As a male I am somewhat obsessed with women. This doesn't mean I fap to my female avatars, but I do spend hours at a time looking at them. I often jest that I'd rather look at a girl's back all day than a guy's. It's like a TV show on Spike, do they use a male or female host? Probably a female one, and a hot one at that. It's not relevant to the show's content, it's just a person you're going to look at and if they can attract you in another way they will.

Lastly, you may have chosen a female character originally to con people, but even if you haven't you're probably going to eventually run into someone who thinks your a chick, and they often treat you special. You don't even have to lie to people, half the time they don't ask if you're a girl, they just flirt with you (it's hillarious when you know it's happening) and they help you with stuff (assuming you are in a position to need/want help with something). You can get free game currency just because you're playing a female character. On one occasion I've actually had the opposite happen where someone blew me off cuz I was a male character and they only wanted to talk with females.

The sex of your avatar is significant, but only if you care about those things. Playing Titan Quest it really doesn't matter to me and I play both. I usually come up with funny names and I may pick the sex of my character to match the name or the idea of my character (I think it's funny to have a dude in a robe casting spells and give him a name to show his weakness in some way).

That is so gay to play a female.

You can 'get away' from women in any number of ways gay or not. If you spend your time on one of the many sites with graphic male-to-male media, that's gay. If you play a video game where you see a man's ass cheeks bouncing up and down the entire time, that could be considered gay. Pretending to be a female isn't gay, and playing a female character is far from pretending to be a female, it's more like having a poster of a woman on your wall vs having a poster of a UFC contender. Neither of these is gay, but you could be, completely independently of these decisions. I personally think a healthy straight male would much rather see a chick character, they're never gunna be ugly unless you want them to be, and with graphics progressing they're looking very realistic now. A guy who thinks it's gay to play a female is just insecure.

I've found in AoC people tend to assume I'm male, even on a female character. Maybe because I'm on an FFA server? Or maybe gamers are finally getting a little more savvy and realize people don't always play their genders. I don't correct them, because having people always trying to give you stuff (and yes, I agree it does happen) or help you with quests you don't need help with, or whatever gets creepy fast.

I have gotten some "Holy ****, Ruse is a girl?" exclamations when ending up on vent in PUG raids or whatever before, lol.

I play dude characters a lot. Mostly to make a mockery of dudes that play chick characters.

I particularly enjoy naming my guy characters things like "Suzie"
