Thread: Staff variety?

    Staff variety?

This occurred to me while idly thinking about making "secondary" damage types more viable. While it's admittedly more of a tweak than a balance, I figured the worst that could happen is tossing it out there and looking stupid, and I do that on an extremely regular basis anyway.

Basically, would it be feasible to add more staff damage types, namely non-standard things like poison, bleeding, and vitality? We have empusa/melinoe using all three, so the graphics are already there. To me at least, it doesn't seem like the existing damage boost skills combined with new staves (blood staff + anatomy, for example) would be significantly different from existing options like fire staff + earth enchantment, and it would open up some variety for builds leaning on those "lesser" damage types.

I'm all for vitality, not sure about bleeding and poison (they are usually Damage over Time's). It does seem rather interesting, I don't know if this will make certain builds overpowered. The options this will open are at least worth considering.

All of these 3 damage types are pitiful against the undead. Maybe their resistances against these should be lowered much in Normal and slightly in Epic?

I don't want the resistances lowered, I noticed that I was getting stomped by undead with my conjurer, but I had to wait until my conqueror friend came along and helped out. I also have some +dmg to undead gear that has dropped that I could have used.

basically, it seems like a change like that would mess up a rock/paper/scissor balance and make it so that it wouldn't need much strategy to think through tough spots in the game if a single (or three) types of damage owned everything.

It messes with the lore of what's effective against undead, too. If we had a holy damage weapon, I would agree with that. Otherwise it's blunt/piercing weapons, in my opinion.

If I have time to make my occult vendor, I'm going to add vitality staves and poison staves. The devs made effects for both of these staff types, they just never implemented them. They use one of the poison projectiles for one of the empusas, I think, but otherwise they remain untouched.

They would be weak against undead, but if you're playing a class that can improve poison and vitality damage, it'd be worth it to use for all other creatures, and simply switch to an elemental staff for undead and whatnot.
