Thread: HOW TO Make Skins

  1. #31
    Hi I have a question.

Is there an easy way you can play as a monster?

Like copy the monster file from the database and paste it somewhere in the player file.
If this is possible an explanation how to do so would be awesome.

There are, essentially, three ways of changing the player's appearance:

The first one is the most compatible in that it let's you play online without problems. It works by overriding the model and/or texture files of the player with new ones. To do this, you'd have to extract the Creatures.arc from TQ or IT and place the monster's files in a folder that represents the player's data. This method works fine for replacing textures and very humanoid monsters, but it will result in either mismatched animations or a thrown off game balance for monsters with a different skeleton.

The second is the easiest: You wouldn't have to copy any files and could build the mod completely from ArtManager. To do this, you create a new mod and change the model, texture and animation data in the player's .dbr (record) to match that of the monster. Most monster pc mods use this method, and it gives fairly good results, but there can be difficulties with ranged weapons. To use an existing character, you'd have to mod the dyes to use a monster skin.

The third method gives the best results, but it is also the most complicated. This method combines overriding models and textures with record editing and, optionally, edited resource files. A player will be able to use existing characters without dying in can use ranged weapons with monsters that originally use no weapons. In order to get the best results, you'd have to edit the mesh file and edit some of the animations. There are no official tools for doing this, but you can download the one's I've written from the tools section of this forum or directly from my website.

There are already a few of these mods in this forum section, so it's possible that you don't have to mod yourself at all.
I'm using the third method for my monster-mod: You can only download the compressed version from my site, but I can send you the dev version in case you need help with overriding.

Hey, I'm totally new to modding. I tried following the instructions here, but I'm lost.

It's apparent that I need to have a program that will allow me to edit/unpack arz files, and that I will have to create folders that aren't there, because I simply don't have these folders or files:

    C:\Program Files\THQ\Titan Quest Immortal Throne\Database\Creatures\pc\female

All I have is an arz file. I have the 1.17 patch and AllSkins 0.8 mod installed and they work just fine in the game, but I don't have any of these folders or files this tutorial assumes I have. This tutorial seems to be aimed at people who already understand how modding Titan Quest works; not newbies.

So I guess my question is: Is there any way you could explain in layman's terms how to create my first skin? I'm clueless here. I have Photoshop, I just need to understand how to find the files I need.

    Thanks!
