The last few days i've spent my time trying to build the perfect character in terms of survivability. While i suspect a paladin built around the same principles as this character may be even better, that requires some more thinking on my part and maybe something i'll get back to later some time. Anyway, atm it's all theory, but i needed to get my thoughts down on paper so to speak, and since i've written it down i might as well share it with you guys, in case someone is interested. I'll probably keep this thread updated as i progress through the lvls.
The process of creation:
Note: I'm a player that is most interested in legendary play (that's when the game really begins imo) and i use tqvault to give my characters items.
I initially got my inspiration from a totally unbalanced weapon, Persephone's Caress. With a whooping +50 health regen, further amplified by gaia's ring and rally health regen this would give me a regen that would actually be useful during a fight and not just between fights as a means of getting hp back.
The health regen wouldn't mean all that much unless i had the defense to go with it tho and nothing in the game has better defense than colossus. As you know, colossus has a very long recharge time and, while you can fix that to a certain extent with resilience, i don't like to be reliant on adrenaline procing to use it.
Therefore i had to get -100% recharge time (or close to it). I studied the recharge items a bit before i decided that Odysseus' Armor, Archmages' Clasp and Tracker's Hood would be the best combination. They would give me -99% recharge which would be enough, while only using three item slots so i could use the rest for choice items. The problem with this was that i needed three different stats for my gear. Odysseus' Armor, fortunately, has -30% to all requirements which would help a lot.
At this point i realised that this build wasn't perhaps all about health regen, but maybe keeping colossus up, while being able to cast rally nonstop for not only buffing, but healing as well. Also i needed a way to kill mobs as my melee dmg would be crap.
Initially i was gonna build a paladin who benefited from the huge +cold dmg percentage on Persephone's Caress while getting some more cold dmg from the storm tree. I realised that even with huge percentiles from the axe and storm nimbus tree, and the wisp the added cold dmg would amount to very little indeed (Elemental dmg for melee doesn't really seem viable atm. Perhaps a percentage of the weapon dmg, on certain weapons, should be some kind of elemental dmg like with piercing weapons).
Therefore i begun looking at another weapon, perhaps even better than Persephone's Caress; Onager. This would nerf my health regen some, but i would get huge mana regen as well (and health regen from onager is still an insane +22 health/sec). It would enable me to cast rally nonstop though, so health gain would be potentially bigger with Onager.
Since i now had a build with insane mana regen and -99% recharge i started looking at the earth tree as a means of killing monsters. I should be able to stack eruptions all over the screen. While i wouldn't have a lot of +fire dmg, still, with the limitless amount of eruptions, i would still be able to do decent dmg.
I had also previously considered a shield for this build, Hephaestus' Molten Shield, but is wasn't ideal for storm. For earth however it would be very nice indeed. The best thing about this shield is ofc it's -20% to requirements, which would enable me to put no points at all into dex and int and only ten in str, so i could pour it all into health, reaching something like 7k+ hp at lvl65, but ofc it would also add more armor protection, health regen and +skill to earth.
Filling out the rest of the slots was easy. Aphrodite's favor (Though possibly Myrmidon's instead) for resistances, +skills and energy regen. Ring of Gaia, as mentioned, for elemental resistances, but mostly health and energy regen. Probably Chiron's Loop for resistances and health regen. And lastly, Conqueror's Buskin, while not a very good item provides a lot of much needed pierce resistance (remember this build is about survivabilty). Several resistances would also be considerably buffed from the rally tree's defiance and battle awareness' iron will.
So that's the build. To me the survivabilty looks like the best i've been able to think of. Atm the only chink in the armor of this character is energy leech, but with something like 100 constant mana regen i hope this won't be a problem.
Anyway, about levling this guy up. I don't think normal will be a problem (it never is ), but epic will probably be the biggest challenge for this character. Before he can use any of his target gear he won't have a lot of things going for him and i think i will have to aim for some other way of leveling him up than going for this build from the beginning and spend some cash at the mystic at lvl45+ when it's time for perma rally/colossus. So epic and not legendary should be the most difficult difficulty for this character, at least in theory.
Comments on this build is welcome I can add that i already suspect the fun part of of this character will be leveling him up and reaching my goals. When he can wear all his gear he'll be mostly spamming rally, colossus and eruption all the time. Possibly a more fun and active build after lvl45 would be a melee paladin built around the same concept of regen and recharge.
It'll be some days before this guy is well underway as i'm having so much fun with my avenger atm. He's in legendary greece atm and things die so fast i haven't even bothered to put points into core dweller to draw aggro I have 30 skill points i haven't spent yet though so i can get him if things get tough in egypt or the orient.
