i'm not completely sure whether i understand you or not so let me put it down like this:

1. Rushing through the game
the storyline has yet to be revealed to us, so there is no telling whether it is just straight forward main questing or you will be able to do side quests as sacred had them. also there is no telling whether there is a monster respawn on TQ, not one that i know of at least.

2. No big cities fer yer gear
I doubt there will be no big cities. and for the record IIRC they mentioned that you will encounter merchants to sell your found gear throughout the game, and probably there also will be ways to purchase items then. i do NOT know whether there will be numerous cities or outposts where you can do this, or you will have to use a transporter mechanism.

It just sunds to me like you won't need a map becurs you just run forward all the time and some times you see a merchant by the road to sell youre stuff to and then you back to runing.

1they have told in interviews that the main quest will be fairly linear but there are a lot of sidequests to undertake too which lead to secret areas and enemies and can give you unique loot as a reward.

2They also said that there are several big cities in the game which will be made very good looking to function as a reward for players who made it that far and the cities are full of activities.

Yea I also like the diablo / sacred style :)

i did like the old sacred style better than diablo, with it's random quests. some were actually quite fun. now that the quests remain the same it's not that interesting to go questing just for the quests... i'm curious whether TQ will include a random quest generator

No one else seems to be pointing out the obvious so i guess ill have to THERE IS A MAP EDITOR don't worry about the size of the world or what you can do considering there will be thousands of player made maps and you can probally make a quest in some shape or form.

oke the game is not as huge as morrowind but it boost 30 hours minimum of gameplay in a beatiful world and if you want to explore every secret area and do every subquest you will be busy for 45 hours which i dont call small and they also said they might release patches with new regions and weapons for the fans to make the singleplayer an multiplayer world even bigger.

It's is not how big it is that matters it is how you move in the world and to me it soud like super mario: You can move forward but you can't go back.

after reading the ign interview another time they state that you will use the portal system to go forward and back and sometimes for certain subquest you have to go back to a region you been before to open for example a secret cave with a creature in it and after doing certain quest in citys new quests will appear in places you have been before

and remember you dont know everything about this game yet they will be suprises to find in the game.

In big letter in the first IGN Interview:

"We are designing the game so it can be played two different ways, one where you focus on the story quests and the adventure... and the second where you explore the whole world"

That pretty much answere my question.

What can i say more then:D

Still i dont think the world is "Huge" like Morrowindish. I would guess more like Sacred but with the help of the modding community it could get huge tho ;)

SERIOUSLY people i wouldn't worry about the size or the maps because at the very least this game will come out with very good stuff of those and they will probally be excellent not to mention the map editor

I don't like the word "map" it soud like a misson based game then. I like the word "world".

oh and look here (in the upper left coner):

Gore!!!!!

woohooo!! :D true proof of gore? ;)

"..and there was much rejoicing" (Monty Python and the Holy Grail)

back to the map/world thingy: i don't mind if it isn't enormous.. i think sacred with UW was big enough already, if you make it bigger than there should be a LOT of variety in regions because large regions make the game boring in my opinion (since you're always fighting the same enemies in the same fields etc)
