View Full Version : Looking for non-overpowered classes, wondering if it gets harder.

I've been playing TQIT with my wife, but the game is getting a bit stale, since we seem to be ridiculously overpowered and destroying everything in sight. She's Nature+Earth, I'm Defense+Storm.
We're currently level 18, and at the Minoan Labyrinth and we've destroyed everything in our path, it's too easy and not challenging at all. I'm wondering if it gets harder, or if not, if there are less overpowered classes to play? I've been considering bone charmer, or maybe ranger, but with most of these types of games I enjoy "tank" style classes. I like paladin, but the whole "being unstoppable," even against red/orange/purple quality hero enemies is kind of boring.
So my question is: Did we choose overpowered classes? And if not, does the game get more challenging at some point? I love the game and the mechanics, but I'm getting very bored with the lack of challenge. :(
Thanks.

what fighting types are you and your wife? melee, range or mage?

of course it gets harder later on.
try the xmax mod for more enemies, or some other mods for more challenge. i don't use mods but i read the forums and some of them seem pretty hard.
but you can't say it's not challenging if you're only at the beginning. if typhon doesn't pose any challenge then act4 will. just keep going, you can't judge the game by the end of normal act 1.
then wait till epic and legendary, that's when the game begins.

why try mods?

Well, as AdamBast says, Xmax allows you to increase the number of monsters you'll face, which would increase the difficulty. But the rest of his post is also true, you can't judge the whole game by just Act I. There are further challenges ahead for you so I suggest you at least play through the entire game (Normal, Epic and Legendary difficulties) once before trying out any of the mods.
Another one I might suggest, although I haven't gotten round to trying is yet, is the Lilith mod which is a whole new game of TQ. Have a read up on it in the Mods section of the forum.

I'm a melee paladin using batter w/rend armor, the energy reserve defense boost 4/12 (forget the name, it's in 1st rank), and I've got thunderball, squall, freezing blast, and the lightning/cold weapon buff in storm with 2 ranks in the skill and 1 rank in the cold damage/slow retaliation modifier (sorry, trouble recalling the names of some of these skills).
I'm primarily melee. Rotation goes something like thunderball, shield rush, batter, squall, and general attacking if everything isn't dead by then.
Wife is primarily nature, skills in Nymph, wolf (one wolf so far), the 10% health/atk speed, etc. buff, healing skill, and the weapon buff in the earth tree (she hasn't invested much in earth yet, mostly in nature).
Part of why it's been very OP is that it seems like very little can even damage my health, and what few things do, she can heal me from 40% health to full in one cast. Add pots, Rally (only 1 point for the regen period), and there's never anything challenging enough for me to think I'll die. I can pull several groups, fight 10, 20, even more mobs without any challenge really, though most mobs are squishy and die in 3-4 hits tops.
To be fair, I got lucky and got a Shadowsting spear and a green quality shield early on, only level 18 now, but I've had the same spear and shield since level 12 or 14 because it's just uber, lucky drops I guess.

If you're looking for a challenge, I would recommend you to not use xmax. The monsters don't get harder, there are just more of them. That means you'll level faster and the game will be even easier, at least until halfway through legendary. But you'll be to bored to even get that far.
If you want mods that really increase the challenge, try Double or Nothing (http://www.titanquest.net/tq-forum/threads/25731-Release-Double-or-Nothing-1.16-(UPDATED-10-22-08)) (non xmax version) or Uber (http://www.titanquest.net/tq-forum/threads/26288-Release-UBER-Mod-1.0).

Normal is always very easy if you halfway know what you are doing, except for Typhon and Act 4. Especially in Multiplayer.
And you can get through there with any kind of character build too - even (sometimes especailly) those who fail in later stages.
As a general rule, a character's worth starts showing by Epic Act 3, i.e. 50% through the game.
Just keep on playing, and try out some team tactics or something. You'll need them in Act 4.

You can't judge the game by level Act I Normal. Wait until late Act III and all of Act IV. You will get loads of challenge there, and lots of fun.
