Laurrrr

Good luck in winning the prize Fozzie, the permanent ban.

Laurrr's list
1. HK-47 (http://images.wikia.com/starwars/images/7/78/Hk47portrait.jpg) (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic)
2. Nikolai Bellic (http://connect.collectorz.com/blog/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/niko-bellic-gun.jpg)(GTA IV)
3. Ghost (http://images.wikia.com/stalker/images/4/4d/Ghost.jpg) (STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl)
4. Manny Calavera (http://media.giantbomb.com/uploads/0/221/177782-manny_calavera_large.jpg) (Grim Fandango)
5. Darth Nihilus (http://images.sodahead.com/polls/000416335/polls_250px_DarthNihilus_1424_519384_answer_6_xlar ge.jpeg) (KOTOR 2)
6. Shale (http://www.gamebanshee.com/dragonageorigins/companions/images/shale.jpg) (Dragon Age: Origins)
7. Strelok (http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20110809165835/stalker/images/thumb/e/e1/Strelok_8.jpg/185px-Strelok_8.jpg)(STALKER series)
8. Vampire (http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20091204115213/stalker/images/9/94/VampireFPS01.jpg)(STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl)
9. The Necrons (http://www.tabletophell.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/DamnationCrusadeNecrons1.jpg) (Warhammer 40k)
10. Altair (http://images.wikia.com/assassinscreed/de/images/6/69/Altair.jpg)(Assassin's Creed)

1. HK-47 is a killing machine. A killing machine with the sense of humor. I really like the character because it is an efficient and loyal friend who is not going to betray you but protect you. Yes, I said friend because after KOTOR 1 and 2 I have become attached to him and never left him out of the party. He doesn't have feelings, he will do what you say, especially if it involves killing somebody.

"Definition: 'Love' is making a shot to the knees of a target 120 kilometers away using an Aratech sniper rifle with a tri-light scope. Statement: This definition, I am told, is subject to interpretation. Obviously, love is a matter of odds. Not many meatbags could make such a shot, and fewer would derive love from it. Yet for me, love is knowing your target, putting them in your targeting reticle, and together, achieving a singular purpose, against statistically long odds."

2. He is a common man who came to Liberty City with the hope to became rich after he read his cousin letters in which he stated that he lives the American Dream. It was all lies and Niko had to get his cousin out of shit and actually do something on their own. He is loyal to his family, ready to kill anyone who fucks with it. He shows remorse but he needs to kill to resolve the problem and he knows it. Sometimes I wondered if he really wanted to do that but in the end I know it was the best decision and I would have done the same.

Ileyna Faustin: [about Mikhail Faustin] He did not used to be like this. When we were young, at home, he was beautiful. He was happy. He made me happy. But then something changed. Years ago. I never quite knew what it was. So many years I wondered what it was, or what was wrong with me that I did not see it in him, or I changed him.
Niko Bellic: Life is complicated. I... I never thought I'd live like this.
Ileyna Faustin: No?
Niko Bellic: When the war came, I did bad things, but after the war I thought nothing of doing bad things. I killed people, smuggled people, sold people.
Ileyna Faustin: And you don't worry about your soul?
Niko Bellic: After you walk into a village and you see 50 children, all sitting neatly in a row, against a church wall, each with their throats cut and their hands chopped off, you realize that the creature that could do this doesn't have a soul.
Ileyna Faustin: God is very complicated. You mustn't give up hope.
Niko Bellic: Well, I don't know about that.

3. Not much to say about Ghost, he is a though stalker, one of the first to enter the Zone and Strelok's best friend. He is number 3 because he respects the friendship with Strelok and is loyal to him. When Strelok wanted to go to the center of The Zone, Fang tried to convince Ghost not to go but he did and they reached the center of The Zone. Master of sneaking, he is a stalker worth of respect and really deserves to be number 3.

Now I'm all alone in this stinking underground facility. Vasiliev doesn't count; he's just a burden which I'll have to protect.
- Ghost

4. Manny Calavera, he is the only reason why I finished Grim Fandango, the game was terrible, the only exception were the dialogues and this character. He is cynical, pesimisthic and would do anything to achieve his goal. +1 from me.

Hector LeMans: Oh Manny... so cynical... What happened to you, Manny, that caused you to lose your sense of hope, your love of life?
Manuel Calavera: I died.

5. He doesn't have feelings, he is like a robot, a robot with an unstoppable hunger for force. An hunger that could conquer the galaxy. I understand him, he needs to survive and if that means destroying all life in the galaxy then so be it!

"Power? Do you think so? You would be wrong. There is no strength in the hunger he possesses… and the will behind his power is a primal thing. And it devours him as he devours others—his mere presence kills all around him slowly, feeding him. He is already dead; it is simply a question of how many he kills before he falls."
―Kreia

6. He is pretty similar to HK-47, in fact, I am pretty sure they added his personality to Shale. He doesn't have that love for killing like HK did, he is more indifferent, with lesser humor than my number 1. He only cares about his Golem brothers, no one else. I like him.

"The darkspawn are an evil that must be destroyed it's true. Though not as evil as the birds...damnable feathered fiends!"

7. I don't like him so much, the only reason why he is here is that he doesn't want to die. He reached the center of The Zone, he was brainwashed, lots of things. I like how he manages to face challenges and doesn't give up. Go Strelok!

I don't know whether I was right or wrong, I guess I'll never know... But I made it. And I guess I should be thankful for that.
- Strelok

8. Vampire is a character that tricked death so many times. There were lots of times when all the members of his group were killed, except him. I like that mysterious thing. It's like he has made a pact with the Devil to live in exchange for others lives. Dunno what to say but he is generally avoided and so should the new players of the game do. Besides that, he is an outcast and loner just like me.

"Stalker born under a lucky star. Many times, the teams he was with would end up in tight spots and every time he was the only survivor. Most stalkers stay away from him on account of the bad luck he is said to bring. Has been roaming the Zone on his own for quite some time now."

9. The Necrons are killers on a Dark Crusade to destroy all life in galaxy. They weren't like this in the beggining but they were fooled by their gods, The C'tan, too take up an armor that brainwashes them and makes them cold and killing robots. Hai faiv!

10. The only reason he is here is because he respects orders and is disciplined. Some say he is a slave but I say it is the perfect killer. Doesn't ask questions and follows orders. Much better than Ezio.

Fozzie's list
1. JC Denton
2. Walton Simons
3. Geralt of Rivia
4. Sadwick
5. Guybrush Threepwood
6. Stan
7. Duke Nukem
8. Raziel
9. Ice Williams
10. The Cultural Advisor

1. JC Denton (Deus Ex)
They genetically engineered him, abused him as a guinea pig for the testing of their nanotechnological implants, fed him crap about terrorists unleashing a deadly virus to bring down civilization and instrumentalized him as a killing machine for their own sinister purposes. But that won't hold, he'll get to the bottom of this, no matter what it takes. And who knows, after finding out more and more about the corruption, the cynycism and immorality of each and every one of the fractions struggling for power in this worn-out, tainted world, maybe the only solution to cleaning up this mess is to actually do put an end to civilization and hope it will arise like a phoenix from the ashes towards a better future.

2. Walton Simons (Deus Ex)
He is the mysterious, scheming villain incarnate. His past is uncertain, his motives unclear and he seems to have his hands in almost any plot going on, always pursuing his own goals and you can never be sure where his loyalties lie, if he has any, at all. You never know, when you ever meet him face to face, will he be a lethal threat or reveal some information, make you some offer, that changes everything you used to think you knew? Last but not least, his voice is just haunting...

3.Geralt of Rivia (The Witcher series)
He is kind of like the Conan of RPG protagonists. He drinks, gambles, gets into tavern brawls, screws almost any wench who crosses his way and after all, he's just in for the money. He also doesn't trouble himself too much about killing random bystanders who are just performing their duty as town guards or the likes. But he does have his principles, is loyal and actually quite understanding. A horny, boozing, violent bastard, but a good guy, really.

4. Sadwick the clown (The Whispered World)
This poor fellow just always draws the short straw on anything. His parents are dead, his grandfather is a lunatic, his brother a jerk, he hates his job at which he really sucks - and he's haunted by nightmares that he is about to destroy the world. The very same world which he is determined to save nonetheless, although it has never shown anything but disdain for him, which is inhabitated by cruel creatures, vicious villains, hopeless hero wannabes to fight them and on top of it all, the stones are plotting to take over! Eventually, he sees no other solution of not destroying the world than effectively stopping time by impaling it's corporeal representation on a planetarium, making matters even worse. But that's not all. Imagine finding out that all your exciting experiences and adventures were just a dream. Sucks, doesn't it? Now imagine that it wasn't even your own dream but that of someone else and that you have to sacrifice your existence to save the other one's. Now, that's just cruel.

5. Guybrush Threepwood (Monkey Island series)
What can I say about him? He's gullible, incompetent, weak and can't grow a proper beard or hold even a small amount of liquor. In fact, the only real talent he has is to hold his breath for ten minutes. But he wants to become a mighty pirate nonetheless. And he manages, in some way, even beats the villain and gets the girl - multiple times. How exactly, he's not even sure of himself, but as rewards go, it's definitely better than just a stupid t-shirt.

6. Stan (Monkey Island series)
You gotta love this guy. He could probably sell a refrigerator to a polar bear and if the world gives him lemons he not only makes lemonade, but immediately starts a Carribean-wide franchise to sell it to unsuspecting tourists for an outrageous price a cup. Or, put differently, if you trap him in a (barely used) coffin for months and bury him in a tomb, he'll come up with a brilliant new business idea (a dubious concept he calls "life assurance") and put it to work the very minute you release him. Where does he take all the energy from, one wonders, especially considering the fact that he is constantly flailing his arms and talking without pause as well, yet he never tires. He's just too eager to make a good deal to worry about things like sustenance and sleep, he even cuts himself off from his apparently only source of hydration (disgusting stuff, sure, but still...) to turn it into a coin trap for customers. That's what I call determination.

7. Duke Nukem (Duke Nukem series - including Manhattan Project, but not Forever)
Alright, this choice is so obvious, it's close to downright boring and he has been featured in some lists here already, but how can you pass him up? It's the Duke! Always fresh out of gum and with at least one finger on at least one trigger of some kind... So he's kicking ass, makin' bacon, admiring the mess a rocket propelled grenade can make of a bunch of ho'napping alien scum and we love him for it, even if he can't always tell an ass from a face but I guess that's the price you pay for wearing shades at night.

8. Raziel (Legacy of Kaine: Soul Reaver)
Punished severely for having grown wings, he eventually emerged from the Maelstrom a disfigured and maimed half-dead wraithlike creature and a cruel mockery of his former noble vampire being, forced to feed upon the souls of degenerated immortals to sustain himself. Disoriented, confused and disgusted both by his appearance and of what has become of his brethren over the millenium he spent spinning in unimaginable agony, he disembarks on a journey through Nosgoth with only one thought in his mind driving him forward: to take revenge on Kain who condemned him to this living hell and the council of vampire lords who didn't object to it. Luckily for him, he just happens to get his hands on a legendary blade called Soul Reaver which might make his success possible against all odds...

9. Ice Williams (Jagged Alliance series)
He is a really nice and upbeat guy which goes a long way for someone who kills for money. People follow him just because he's so damn likeable, no one has anything bad to say about him, really. It almost makes you forget how much havoc he can wreak if he holds an automatic weapon in his hands but you'll be really glad about that when you find yourself surrounded by a bunch of heavily armed blackshirts and he saves your life. You just can't help returning the favour. After all, if he bites it, who's gonna feed his dog?

10. The Cultural Advisor (Civilization 2)
Back in the days, Civ had FMV advisors who changed costumes throughout the course of the game fitting the current era and who were downright hilarious.
Unfortunately for this guy, back in the days Civ also had no cultural gameplay mechanics whatsoever. And on top of
therefore being completely useless he had the most embarassing costumes. From playing drunk as a poor Dionysos
knock-off, over cringeworthily wagging his head to make his jester's cap bells jingle, to a quite horryfying
Elvis impersonation. But all that wasn't ever enough to dampen his spirits and he bravely kept on spouting obvious
or simply superfluous suggestions. You just have to admire his spirit and that's why he is on this list.

---
Honorary Mention:
I finally excluded him from the list after long thought, but he nearly made it, so I'm putting him here:

11. Minsc (Baldur's Gate series)
OK, another recurring character but how can you not love a simple-minded, big-hearted, ass-kicking guy who tends lovingly to his miniature giant space hamster and is always prepared to give his life for the hot mage he has sworn to protect even though he never even had a shot at hitting that? He's a fierce opponent and an even fiercer friend. So don't anger him or Minsc wants smash! That goes especially when he wields a certain silver blade that is capable of felling almost any foe with a single blow.

No no no no, I see what you are doing here but they will vote for me. You don't know how many phone calls I got regarding the free beers.

Very, very tough decision. Both of you have deep, well-presented lists here. I can identify with characters on both lists, and there are characters on each list from games I've always wanted to play. All I can say is well done, both of you! It's unfortunate I can only vote for one list, alas. Neither one of these lists can be considered a "loser."

Tough choice. So I'm going at this structuralized.
These are the characters I actually know from playing the games;

Laurrr
1. HK-47 (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic)
2. Nikolai Bellic (GTA IV)
6. Shale (Dragon Age: Origins)
10. Altair (Assassin's Creed)

Fozzie
3. Geralt of Rivia
7. Duke Nukem
8. Raziel

I love HK-47, +1 for that. Nikolai was pretty decent (his cousin ruined the entire GTA franchise though), but he was supposed to be realistic and they went overboard with him. Won't give you points for that. He keeps killing but shows remorse for doing so and they try to picture him as a decent guy. Plus he took care of his annoying cousin way too much. Shale was annoying, humorless and uninteresting. She was like a really, really bad HK-47 rip-off. Altair was a characterless puppet, so -1 for that. Which totals to -1 for Laurrr.

Fozzie;
Who doesn't love Duke Nukem? The only reason to not give you points would be because he's a too common character for such lists, but that only proves Duke Nukem is indeed awesome. Geralt was not interesting. Very limited character, morally ambiguous (not in the interesting way) and he spits on the good looks of pale-skinned white haired dudes. Sure, he's like Conan for the RPG world, but Conan was awesome, Geralt is lame, -1. Raziel was a tragic character, pretty awesome. I really should finish that game once. +1. Which totals to +1 for Fozzie. Sorry Laurrr. My judgment is certainly borked because I haven't experienced so many characters on both lists.

@Admins - is there any way to edit the pool and make it longer if this will be a tie?

Laurrrr

Fozzie wins. GG.

Fozzie

Wow, that was a really close finish - and I won, yay!
My regards to everyone who competed and thanks to all who voted for me!

Now excuse me, I have to run a victory lap with my trophy to the Rocky theme playing... (you know, like Kirk on the Dance Marathon episode of Gilmore Girls) :D

Mercy is a weakness Fozzie, you need to eliminate it if you want to genocide the Pokemon world with me.

Well, I don't. And be careful, I don't think this kind of statement lies well with the Mods and the rules of conduct in this forum (or any respectable forum, for that matter).
