Runic Games has announced Torchlight II through an official website for the game.Initially slated for digital release in spring 2011, the game adds online co-op, an improved user interface, and fully customizable characters.
Here’s a blurb:
The most exciting new feature of Torchlight II is the multiplayer element. Play with your friends, and use the free peer-to-peer matchmaking service to meet new players of a similar level and interest.
Together players will discover expansive randomized outdoor areas and deep ominous caverns; random instanced and persistent dungeons, a huge variety of all new monsters and villains, endless variations of loot to find, and quests to complete.
Players journey through the perilous Overworld, enjoying all new weather features, time of day events, and a rich and cunning story to drive gameplay.
Features:
Multiplayer – Play with your friends over a local area network, or over the Internet. A free matchmaking peer-to-peer service lets you make new friends for exciting co-op play.
Customizable Characters – Players create and customize a character from one of four classes available and choose an animal companion. Through cosmetic, class, and gender choices, skill path decisions, and the treasures they acquire, each character can be custom-tailored to each player’s needs.
Moddability – Torchlight II will release with an updated version of TorchEd, the Torchlight editor. Players have the option to create their own mods, adding even more content to the world. You and your friends can download the same mod and play together!
New User Interface – Torchlight II boasts an entirely new, improved user interface, designed to be easier than ever for new players to pick up and play. Thanks to this intuitive interface, players have immediate access to a rich and varied world, with little experience necessary.
Overworld Areas – Torchlight II has large randomized overworld areas to explore with weather, time of day cycles, and random events that provide players with even more content to experience.
Random Dungeons – Delve into randomly generated dungeons within the game at any time for extra experience and rare loot. Dungeons in Torchlight II have even more branching paths to explore with friends filled with random events, rewards and dangers.
Retirement System – Once characters are sufficiently leveled up, they can “retire” and bestow specific benefits and perks onto new characters.
Pets – Players choose a pet to accompany them. Pets level up along with the player, and help in battle, learn spells, carry items, and perform a variety of support services.
Fishing – Fishing returns in the sequel! Players can take a break from the high-energy pace of adventuring to relax by one of the many fishing holes and see what they can catch. Fish have unique benefits for the player and pet, while a number of other rewards can also be discovered.
Awesome stuff.
An MMO is planned for the franchise as well, but there’s still no date yet.

Yeah, pretty cool. I read that on evilavatar.com (http://www.evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=120070) this morning. They're interviewing the Runic team today for their podcast, which comes out tomorrow.

It's nice with multy and all but they should really add depth to it. Like with a STORY. Otherwise we got a Serious Sam Hack&Slash all over again.

News:
Torchlight 2 is already sounding like a much larger game than the original. "People felt a little claustrophobic with the structure - Torchlight is just one town and a series of dungeons underneath. So the obvious remedy for that is to make big overworlds and different cities, so we're doing that," explains Max Schaefer, CEO of developer Runic
Players will also be able to customize their character in the sequel with the "ability to select hair styles," but it is unclear if additional customization will be available. Runic is also working on a free-to-play MMO version of Torchlight, but Torchlight 2 will be released first. Says Schaefe

News:
Torchlight 3 out before Diablo 3, Runic CEO hypothesizes
Runic Games CEO Max Schaefer respectfully believes that a third Torchlight game could be out before Blizzard's Diablo 3 -- a joke we'd made when the second Torchlight was recently announced. The executive tells us that the efficient size of the Runic team, which has a corporate goal to never grow above 40, would have the ability to get out another significantly upgraded sequel before Blizzard's behemoth arrived. Torchlight and its sequel have both had brisk development cycles lasting less than a year.
Schaefer told us, "[Blizzard has] an impossible task. Blizzard can not get away with doing a Torchlight 1. If they put out a single player game, an RPG that's kinda stripped down for $20, people would say, 'What the hell happened to Blizzard?' They don't have that luxury. Everything has to be super epic. More epic than anything that's come before, more epic than World of Warcraft. They have to do that. It puts them in a really tough spot, I don't envy them. It has to be perfect."
Given his deadpan delivery on the subject, we wanted to make sure he was serious about Torchlight's third installment beating the Blizzard behemoth to market, "I really think we will, I'm not joking about it. I'll be the first to buy Diablo 3, I'm a huge fan. I just know what it's like over there.

i liked torchlight, and im eager to play the second game. but hes already talking about pushing a third out in under a years time??? jeez, take some extra development time and maybe your game could go from "pretty good for the price" to "frickin awesome".

Torchlight 2 To Provide Full Mod Support
http://www.gametrailers.com/news/tor...vide-full/2460
Those amongst you counting down the days until Torchlight 2’s release will now have something else to make the wait that much longer. Runic Games confirmed to Joystiq that Torchlight 2 will offer full, free mod support, as well as multiplayer mod support. Fear not though, because it was also noted that players will be able to search for multiplayer games with or without mods, and XP gained in all games (mods or not) will stay with your character.
Lastly, Runic mentioned that all item drops are client specific, so only you can see that uber powerful weapon flashing on your screen. Surely this will make loot hunting easier, no?
So, full, free mod support and XP across all game types – I’d say that’s more than enough to be excited for Torchlight 2, but of course we wanna hear from YOU. Does Torchlight 2 already have a spot in your gaming library?

The first one had some huge flaws in regards to replay value, although it was cheap there were still some annoying factors. I'll definitely let some people play through it and hear what they think before I invest in this one (although from the Totalbisquit interview it sounded like they realized many of their flaws).

"So... where is Torchlight 2? Didn't you guys say that you were planning to try to release this year?"
Well, yeah. We did - and we made a good run at that. We've come to the realization, however, that getting a game of this scope up to the quality and polish level we want to achieve is going to take a little longer; especially since we want to run a small beta before release to ensure that our launch is smooth.
The first Torchlight was released in record time, but it had plenty of issues that a little more development could have resolved. We didn't have the resources at the time to give Torchlight that treatment. Right at this moment though, we do have those resources for the sequel, and we feel strongly that we should apply them to make this the best game we can make and hopefully one that you'll enjoy and continue to want to play in the future. We've probably had 18 months of full development time on it so far - not excessively long yet, as far as that goes. The amount of time we need to take it the rest of the way is relatively small.
We feel pretty safe in saying that if you enjoyed Torchlight at all, this sequel is superior in every respect. Right now our job is to ensure that the quality level is consistent all the way to the end.
Besides, you're all playing Skyrim right now anyway, aren't you? Or Battlefield 3? Or Uncharted 3? Or Saints Row 3? Or Arkham City? Or Skyward Sword? Or Minecraft? Or Modern Warfare 3? Or Dark Souls? Or Assassin's Creed Revelations?
Those are awesome games. When Torchlight 2 goes live, we want it to be awesome too - all the way through.

Played it and passed it. It has some compability issues, but it can be fixed.
For the game overall I am very pleased with it. I've played an' Engy and it was hella fun. The combat is done pretty well, but does not offer much of a challenge if played at lower difficulties. I recommend it on atleast normal, or hard. Loot is distributed very good, with maybe tiny lack of mage type items. The spells are awesome, and all active spells gain additional features as you level them up (increase in damage, decreased mana cost, some completely new and cool stuff, like exploding rock or something like that (engineer)).
It ain't a dungeon crawler anymore, but it still has that good ol' TL feel to it. As I said, I like it. 8/10

About TL2: is there a boxed version available or coming out soon ? The game seems interesting but I'm not fond of download only-games (guess I'm such an old-fashioned old fool). Similarly with Grim Dawn, would love to buy it once it comes out, but it needs to be boxed.
spectre
11-13-2012, 08:54 AM
Yes, there is a boxed version available on the German market with two language options (English and German). But at the moment there still seem to be some multiplayer issues with that version.
But if you don't care about Multiplayer it could be an option for you ;)

Violos

Steam version. Does it make such a difference?
Anyway, I must say I do not like it that much. Played 2 chars to around level 10, and while it basically has everything a ARPG needs, and does a lot of things right, it just does not catch me that much.
Mostly, I suppose, it is because of the art style. While practical, much of the colorful interface seems to come straight from World of Warcraft. Then you have the four-fingered comic toons with their Disney hair and faces... which is ok by itself, I suppose, and might even work with the overall darker theme... but juxtaposing all that with Diablo music only serves to constantly remind the player of the atmosphere it has not.
All those comicy colors and effects, with bad weather, bloom and whatnot around it, also make it rather hard to see what exactly is going on as enemies swarm from everywhere and explode to randomly spammed skills.
Much less clear than in TQ, at least, and even that becomes a big mess in multiplayer. I dread to see how that works in TL, even with some thnigs turned off.
And finally, it brings back the one thing I found ridiculous when I heard it about D3, which is mages wielding 2-handed hammers because their spells are based on weapon damage.
While generally a good idea in terms of scaling, they could at least have limited that to magic weapons. My mage was carrying a freaking Bombard (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombard_%28weapon%29), because its (natural?) knockback transferred to spells, and waved that around in one hand as he was casting.
It sure was effective, but... WTF?
P.S.
One question though: Do all weapon abilities transfer to all spells? Or to all spells using damage/DPS?
spectre
01-04-2013, 12:59 PM
Steam version. Does it make such a difference?
Depends. Some users have experienced problems in the past when searching for each others games in Multiplayer (between different versions), but all in all it should work
@artstyle: Yeah, well...it doesn't bother me much personally and I somehow like it, even if TQ "looks" better. I'm sure there will be mods though. There was a high-res texture mod for TL1 as well, and there's already a darker shader mod for TL2 (look here: http://forums.runicgames.com/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=43879)
My mage was carrying a freaking Bombard, because its (natural?) knockback transferred to spells, and waved that around in one hand as he was casting.
Huh, really? I have never tested that...
Played 2 chars to around level 10,
Well, then you haven't seen that much yet ;)
One question though: Do all weapon abilities transfer to all spells? Or to all spells using damage/DPS?
Depends on the weapon ability, I'd say, but as said above: I don't know what exactly works and what doesn't
There are some spells which depend on weapon DPS, yes, but those are a selected few (Examples being the Magma Spear, Magma Mace, Icy Blast, Shocking Burst, etc.). The rest only scales with skill and player level and the Focus attribute.
Here is a list that might be handy: http://torchlight.4fansites.de/forum/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=1349

Let's see how much I end up playing it, then I'll switch there.
there's already a darker shader mod for TL2
THANK YOU for that! This is just what this game needs to take it out of Pyroland.
Using this (with the "normal" settings from darkd3.com (http://darkd3.com/)) and turning off the "holo-cam" actually makes it look quite nice and atmospheric.
And yes... while the tooltip info in that list does not mention it, I now think that it is indeed the ones that use weapon damage or DPS which also convey weapon stats (even those, like knockback, that are not listed as being "conveyed").
Those are also the spells which work with Wand Chaos - probably because it adds what, in TQ, would be a weapon effect.
