im a level 28 summoner and i need to visit an oracle to decide which i should invest in... summon core dweller, wolves or the sylvan nymph
sensation

I think you better don't take the Sylvan nymph, i founded here always weak...
The wolves or core dweller, mhh. I had the wolves, but in the middle of normal act 3 I had the feeling they where very weak. But i never had a core dweller so i can't compare...

Don't invest in pets pre-epic, they're weak, especially in orient and hades, so wait 'till epic and then visit mystic. Then at the beginning of epic you'll have to choose between wolves and core dweller or both at the same time; if you have problems defensively, go with dweller, if if with offense, wolves and both if you don't don't struggle anywhere... If you have problems everywhere, invest in your skills, not in pets IMHO

urm..... what is IMHO???
and at lvl 26 summoner, i have the worst troubles staying alive.. as soon as they kill my core dweller, i go down, even with regrowth
i tried going with wolves for a little while, but they died out to easily
so then i tried the nymph and she didnt exactly have the best attack..
but the dwellers ATK is good and his defence is godly
more advice please..:(
apreciated

IMHO = In My Humble Opinion
funny two posts before you've said you're 28:D
you don't need a pet on normal, they're waste of points, rather invest in your skills, maybe posting titancalc build would be fine - that way we could help you more

Have you played casters before? You have to move, move, move all the time. It is not a build where you can stand still and just fire, even with pets out front.
Summoner is humongously powerful in Normal, even with no pets. Damnationed gave you good advice. With Eruption, VO, Earth Enchantment, Plague and Heart of Oak, you have plenty of things to sink your skill points into. You don't need 16 points (minimum) for CD or Wolves on top of that. Trying to develop everything simultaneously will leave you weak.
I avoided pets entirely, and my Summoner was one of my most powerful mages ever in Normal. 500 DPS by the time I got to lateish Act 2. And that was not including the damage from Eruption...
My technique is to boost up Eruption as early as I can. You can kill all bosses safely with it (if you choose) and it's also tres excellente for wiping out groups of archers before they even know that you're there.
Melee groups are, of course, your biggest challenge. However, Summoner has some very effective ways to deal with them:
1) Max Plague tree. It kills a lot of things on its own in Normal. And that which it doesn't kill is crippled in terms of movement speed.
2) Put a point in Heat Shield and keep it on all the time. 15% damage resistance is excellent. If you add Dionysus' Wineskin in two jewellery pieces, you will have 27% damage resistance total. Doesn't sound like much, but it turns heavy hits into not-so-heavy hits.
3) One point in VO and some more into the third synergy to get more stunning fragments. This is a close-range skill. I never lob it at distant enemies, that's what Eruption is for. Instead, I cast VO right at my feet if melee monsters swarm me. Then drop an Eruption right on top of yourself. Result - monsters get stunned by VO, then roasted by Eruption a second later while they're still helpless and stunned. Works like a champ, all the time.
Finally, give some thought to slowing monsters even further with 33/50% slower attack relics or charms in your gear. My Diviner currently has two 33% relics on her gear and (once she's hit a monster with her staff) she can stop and take photos while the monster swings at her - and still have time to take a short nap and then dodge before the weapon hits her.
Even Formicid Captains, which are among the fastest movers and attackers in the game, are no match for her. She's dancing around them like an Ali butterfly while they're mired in treacle and swiping at her in slo-mo.

I don't even use Regrowth. Plague + Eruption (with VO for safety) makes a real mess of the battlefield.

Doesn't heat shield only protect against fire?

Welcome, Temp.
Heat Shield mainly protets against fire, that is true. But, if you look in it's description, it gives 15% damage resistance. That applies to all physical damage. And to add to that, Aionios gives 8% damage resistance, and the Artifact Star of Ishtar gives 15% more. It all adds up. :D

its physical damage only...

Heh, I thought that, but I could have sworn that Persona said it reduced damage from Machae Grandmaster Archers . . .

nothing special as they do mostly physical damage...

I thought that archers only did piercing damage.

An example:
Teucer's Warbow
120-131 Damage
25% Piercing
Speed: Slow
See that 25% Piercing? It means that if you do 100 (physical) damage then 25 damage-points will be converted into Piercing damage. All archers and spearmen do both physical and piercing damage.
Damn Fallen, you're supposed to know this by now... :p

I still don't know a lot of the game mechanics. Take shields, for example. I don't know why it says "83 damage." I would assume it has something to do with Shield passives and skills, but I'm not sure.

Yes. That would be damage done when using a sheild attack. The other is the percent chance to block an amount of damage.
