I just started playing this game and am trying to decide which masteries to go with. I'd just like to ask a quick question to help my planning:
Is it possible to have multiple pets up at the same time? I.e. can I have both a Lich King and a Sylvan Nymph up at the same time?

yes, you can summon multiple pets just as you can have multiple active buffs. and that nymph frolicking around is perhaps the funniest thing ive seen in a video game in quite some time.

If you like using pets then try a nature/spirit build. The build has alot of useful buffs that help you and your pets.

Yeah, that's exactly the build I was thinking about. Hunter/Nature was the initial plan but so far bows haven't impressed me much so I'm probably gonna skip that.

Bows in general aren't impressive. That is, until you give them to a Hunter. Then hooboy are they crazy. Marksmanship adds a set amount of Piercing damage to all of your attacks, and then theres several, well, many hunter skills that give +% piercing damage. Once you take into account all of the always useable Hunter skills for bows, they are really really impressive with bows.

Looking at the skills gave me the impression that bows wouldn't come anywhere near the damage of a melee warfare (or rogue for that matter). Wrong assumption?
Also, if anyone could tell me which would have an easier time as a long term character for play in legendary: Hunter/Nature or Spirit/Nature?

My Ranger(Hunting/Nature) I'm building, will be able to use Call of the Hunt permanently. Which adds 138%ish to Pierce and Bleed damage, it also gives a bleed damage on every hit, and a substantial aspd bonus.
Art of the Hunt adds 68% to Pierce damage. These two skills alone triple any pierce damage a bow does, which bows convert around 30% of its physical damage to pierce damage.
Marksmanship adds a flat Pierce damage bonus, which is of course multiplied by Call and Art of the Hunts. Now we tack on Study Prey which will lower Damage Resistance and Pierce Resist by 60%. Which can have varying multiples of damage boost to your bow attacks depending on the prey's pierce resist.
All of this not counting the 16% chance to fire three arrows in the time of a single shot, nor Puncture Shot and Scatter Shot arrows which only serve to increase the pierce damage, and AoE damage of a Hunter.
A Rogue will definitely do larger bursts of damage to a single target, but they won't even match a Hunter's ability to decimate packs of enemies. For a Bow to really shine, it has to be a Hunter's hands.
Its like giving a Spear to a pure Warfare (i.e. no defense nor hunting that can get use out of a shield or spear). You just can't see how impressive they can be. Likewise, a Hunting character without Warfare, would be insane to use a Sword, Mace, or Axe instead of a Spear/Bow.

I guess that would indeed sum up to a nice amount of damage.
This gives me 3 options though:
Hunting/Nature
Hunting/Spirit
Spirit/Nature
Not sure what would be best for legendary. If there is any 'best' that is. :)

Just pick your masteries based on your playstyle. I haven't played hunting yet so I can't comment on those builds. There isn't a "best" for legendary. I've taken both a melee character (warfare/spirit) and a magic user (storm/nature) to legendary and by far the easiest was the storm/nature build.
