At low levels put one point into regrowth and at least 7-10 into Call of the Wild. Then progress up the tree a little, grab Heart of Oak, and then go on to your nymph and Dissemination. All the while add almost all your attribute points to Strength so that you can use up-to-date weapons and armor.
That's what I did at least.

Nature seems like a pretty defensive mastery to me - I'd use it that way and grab another mastery to bolster my attack. Good choices would seem to be Earth, Storm, Warfare or Rogue.
Something I found while levelling earth early on was that I helped my core dweller much more by powering through the tree and unlocking his upgrades than I would by just pumping his base skill. Those first points in new abilities seem to add a lot of strength to minions, so I'd try raising your mastery fairly aggressively, just slotting in enough points to get by until you've got all the upgrades. Then start spending more heavily on the most basic ones.
One skill in Nature that I experienced first hand was Plague...a monster cast this on me and start hosing my life with it. I thought I'd wait it out with help from potions but as soon as it would go away I'd catch it again - it jumped from my core dweller to me and back again rapidly until it was becoming a serious problem...I had to dismiss my core dweller to get rid of it at all. No idea how well it works as a player skill, but I was very impressed with the speed and tenacity of the thing as a monster attack.
