I'm rather fed up with the Warrior skills. No health, no fighting skills, just these flashy Hews and dealing 500 points to a an 80 point skeleton once in a while. Whoever heard of trained fighter not being able to defend worth anything? And the skill trees in Warrior are just just teeny increases in random chances to do something knowing that most will max at 25% anyway. Frustrating. If I'm skilled in something why can't I just do it? Why would it be random?
I don't think I'm doing anything unusual here, using dual wield, Battle Rage, Onslaught, 2 Blue Maces. I have Obsidian Greaves and helmet, a blue ring, a blue shield. Max damage done is 500 but it was luck, not skill!! Makes no sense. I'm level 20 and right outside Memphis, I can't even fight 8 Beetles with 60% fire resist equipped and not get half my points knocked off. Oh sure, he could keep throwing Battle Standard up on every fight but why should he have too? Wouldn't it be better if he could just fight to begin with? I mean what a waste. In Warrior school do they teach you battle standard because they are out of the real stuff?
Out of desperation last night, while narrowly avoiding a run in with a frog, I went Conqueror. I had saved 16 mastery points but wanted to keep saving. So sure I was a little behind but now I've used the points.
So tell me is it me or my character? Should I just go back to my Ranger and Theurgist who seem to be doing better? Or is the point of Warrior or Conqueror that they get pummeled but survive?

I've got a warrior level 29 that kicks butt. My skills were 32 to the mastery, maxed out all the dual wield tree. With all of them maxed, you can do a special dual attack more than half the time which is devastating.
Forget about battle rage, its chances are so slim that the points are wasted. I didn't use whirlind, battle standard or war horn, at least not yet. Try to maximize the onslaught tree as much as possible too.

(This should be in the Warfare forum btw). Hi, the following is my personal advice - please see if it helps. :)
1) you are a bit low on the Warfare mastery itself.
2) Are you dual-wielding and not getting results you want? It's because DW only shines when the entire tree is well-filled with skill points. Since you've chosen to be a Conqueror, make the best of your limited skill points FOR NOW by using Shield skills, at least for now - they give more bang for your buck. So remove your points in dual-wield FOR NOW and pump Defense. You should also temporarily give up War Wind as it is less effective with 1 weapon.
3) You have too many points for this stage in Battle Standard. For now, 1 point will do. Consider respeccing the rest to Dodge Attack/Ignore Pain instead.
4) Too many points in Battle Rage/Crushing Blow. Respec out, leave just one point in each if you like.
5) If you prefer, since you have so many points you can respec, you may pump Warfare mastery instead so you can reach higher level important skills like CrossCut, Triumph and Doom Horn. (War horn is important, keep it at 4).
DEFENSE:
6) Put a point in Battle Awareness and have it active all the time.
7) If you pump Defense higher, add Focus, and Shield Charge. Equip a shield and try Shield Charge. ;)
8) Put a point in Batter and Rend Armor if you can. Try putting it on your right mouse button and when faced with a 2 or 3 foes, batter them.
9) Put at least a point in Armor handling.
10) put a point in Rally and Inspiration if possible - Rally when you are about to go into a tough fight. You can even use Rally to heal yourself and allies.
When you have reached high levels, and partly depending on your equipment, you can respec out of shield skills and pump dualwield/warwind as high as possible and watch how it works for you. Some like it, many others get addicted to shield attacks, which are awesome.
Meanwhile, keep those resistances decent. :)

Oh sorry, I missed the Warfare forum, feel free to move if needed mods.
Maybe Warfare was the tree I should have started by getting high level mastery then assigning big points? Darn, now I sort of regret falling for the the lure of the Conqueror, I only wanted it for defense not really aggression. And I thought Adrenalin might help. I followed Battle Standard just from some other posts. But I spread the points out just because I thought I'd stick with a Warrior.
I guess I need to recheck Battle Rage, I kept thinking that was what was keeping me alive. During a good fight it triggers a lot (cool sound too) but then again, I'm getting hit a lot. Once it triggers though, most enemies are 2 hits so...the only time I send things flying around.
I'm dual wielding a nice blue Mace and Green Mallet and it just doesn't seem to work well. Earlier I was using a bow but I went to single weapon and shield just to see if I could manage. However, single weapon is really boring imho, for a warrior. For a D2 Pally no problem, but in this game seems boring. So you are right, while dual wielding I'm really dropping health, using potions at a high rate.

Playing as a pure Warrior until Act IV normal, I was level 32ish when I completed that Act. Still, Typhon kicked my behind and I needed to kite around before killing him but dying 2 times (slow reflexes, getting careless and lag are just some of the things that could go wrong :p) in the process.

My pure Warrior build looking something like this at 32.
Now, this character is a Harbinger (with the expansion) and in Act IV.
Take a look at the Warfare Mastery section for more hints, tips and problems many of us have posted.
(Moved to the Warfare forum per the topic starter's request!)
I used to play mainly casters in the past, but started a dual-wield character recently. I started with the dream mastery and then added Warfare and began dual-wielding starting at around level 17. Been dual-wielding since and had no deaths until well into epic (first death at 45, to the Manticore, and that would have happened to any melee character without Manticore-special-equipment). Now, the Dream mastery does offer some defense, but I'm not really making use of those skills yet.
The trick is really to pump out so much damage that mobs die before they kill you. Maces are slow, and slow is bad. You can max out the attack speed even with slow weapons later on, but not so early in the game, so use swords, add life leech if need be, and play aggressively. If the beetles are dealing so much damage at level 21, you lack damage or more likely speed. you also need to max the mastery before you pump Hew/CC/Tummult because you need the health and the stats. Oh, and Warfare does have defensive skills! War Horn line and Battle Standard tree!
I posted a bit about my electrical Harbinger in the Dream Mastery forum below -- perhaps it contains a few thoughts that may spark off some ideas. :)

I really don't know what to do about the maces, I have a blue one that is giving me good damage bonus 20% and the other is life leeching both are in the 31-52 damage range which is the max base on most weapons I find or buy right now. Also, swords seem fairly rare and the couple decent ones I've found I can't use the dex req is too high. I'll keep my eyes open though.
Ok, I'm going to reassign points to get higher in Warfare and see what happens. I'll take points out of Battle Standard, Battle Rage, War Wind and go from there. If I have left over, I'll try to go for Shield Charge but 10-15 damage with stun looks weak to me for 30 energy. But I'll give it a try.
Thanks all for your help.

I feel your pain about the warrior character. I've played a battlemage and a conqueror through Typhon. The conqueror did quite well but took some time to kill Typhon because of his life leech aura and breath weapons (had to keep using hit and run with shield charge and batter). I started with defense, so I maxed that tree to get Collosus Form. I only used the warrior mastery for onslaught tree, 1 point in battlerage and its synergy, 1 point in battlestandard, weapons training maxed, and a couple points in war horn tree. I stopped at 24 on the warrior mastery because I didn't want to spend the extra 8 points to get the cherry at the top of onslaught.
If you're a conqueror, I suggest you take all your points out of dual wield if you haven't already -- the shield is the backbone of the defense mastery with most of it's skills linked to it. I also suggest you visit the merchant between the Western and Eastern Silk Road portals in Babylon (he's next to the old man that updates your "Mystery in the Mountains" side quest). He has some nice shields for sale (he does in Immortal Throne, I don't know about TQ).
