View Full Version : Shield vs. Dual Wield

What do u guys think of it? What is the best combo out there?
Im using dual atm with two weapons but now i found a great shield that i fancy. When i look at DPS i do more damage per second when equiping a shield than when i use two weapons as im getting slower with two weapons.
I have a few skills in dual wield and my guess would be that with higher levels i would do more DPS with two weapons than when using a shield.
So what do u think. Does the game calculate the right DPS for me, does it count the skills (for example 6% of doing 50%more damage and such)? Or does it only compare the "base" damage?
Later!

The search function is great ! Most all of these types of questions have been asked numerous times in the past and answered by the devs ... just a FYI
Oh, and welcome to the forums :D

The +% chance things are not calculated in the dps number.

Given shields can add 50%+ block for hundreds of damage at a time, I'm seriously reconsidering my dual wielder.

Dungeon Lords allowed you to use a shield with bows and when dual wielding. Too bad nobody else does it, but I guess it would be kind of overpowered in Titan Quest.

The game drops a ridicously amount of shields in the beginning, and a very low amount of good swords/axes. After that, it gets a little better. I tried both dual wielding (warfare/earth) and weapon/shield (rogue/defense), and i found dual wielding to be much more fun, especially with the earth enchantment making your strikes glow yellow. I cant wait to get all my dw skills maxed out, and a attack speed of 150%+, thats gonna be some serious kick ass warrior :).

I think my next build will try to max out attack speed :) That's about the only viable DW option I think.

I like using a shield because of the shield attacks, it may be less dmg but its almost the same as dual weild, with added bonuses.

I'm in the same boat here ... I've been poring over the stats of a shield user and a dual wielder and I cant make up my mind ...
I took a shield user and a dual wielder up to a respectable level to see what they are like but now I cant decide which one to play.
The one issue I have is which class to group the dual wielder with ie rogue/earth/spirit etc ... I really cant tell if rogue will help enough with blade honing and poison and lethal strike to dual wielding or not ...
One thing I do like about the defense tree is shield charge; just like charge from WoW. Although I can tell the damage is much less.
anyways ...

I finished the game playing defense/storm. I didnt put any points other then masteries in Storm, i regret to chose Storm as a second mastery but anyway.
Last lvl was very hard for me even i had most defensive skills. I don't know how any dualwielder will survive there without some sort of heals (other then potions) and when i start playing epic it gets worse. I barely made out my way but i got stuck in end of first act. I got %80 stun resist and the boss stuns me there and i can't do anythingelse but die. I am sure Spellcasters/hunters any ranged class would overcome there but for closecombat its very hard even i am defense skilled like hell. Most my equipment is decent also.
I suggest every1 to chose 1 mastery and specialize that on normal diffuculty setting and start making strategys for Epic diffuculty. It really is challenge there especially when you are alone.
A lot of reviewers play game 1 hour on normal setting and say this game is
linear.
But really when u unlock harder diffuculties the game forces you to make some sort of strategy, you can't just bargain and kill every1 in 1 hit anymore. This game roxx

Does that mean that the higher difficulties are not soloable? I do not plan on ever playing this game online.

just a comment here:
shield is entirely viable, a match for dual wield, perhaps in burst damage.
'exotic carapace' 200 damage.
i'm hopin' theres a few more option for shieldbashers.. this is the first one i've found.

I dont think a shield user can outdamage any dual wielder, even with all the shield skills. With alot of points in all the DW skills you will be hitting with both swords alot, making your standard damage like x1.7. And that doesnt even take in the factor all the % chance skills on every hit, since you will be hitting alot more (assuming that hitting with both swords at once counts as 2).

yeah, it makes sense.
wouldn't make alot of sense if the shield could outdamage the sword XD

Yeah, but you can reallly feel the difference between the shield and sword. Im using way more potions then i did with my rogue/defense char (but even with him i was using alot of pots). Close combat has it alot tougher then the ranged combat (at least in normal).

shieldbash+thunderball+freeze = keep your enemies forever frozen.
close combat is indeed very tough - things change at epic difficulty though.. those archers are very nasty.. so its not just melee with the short end of the stick :P
long story short, no one can really stay still for long without getting decimated.
when the going gets tough, the shield really helps out... not like you couldn't take the shield skills and not use melee.

I completed the game with a dual wielding warfare/defense character with few problems, have yet to die in epic difficulty although I've not played that far in yet. If I die its normally from charging into a group of mobs to warwind not realising one is a hero and not having a potion running when I start :P
169% attack speed and all dual wield skills maxed, warwind maxed, armor improvements maxed, dodge maxed etc. Sure I have to use a fair amount of potions but thats what they are there for :) Increasing attack speed makes a big difference to you dps output since it seems that special skills get a check per swing - more swings = more specials.

Brokkah - What are you using from the Defence tree? How do you find the Warfare / Defender overlap?

im using warfare, dw now. havnt played that much, lvl 23 on char but still. Im gonna go for max dw and try to reach chainlightning cause i cba to run after the archers. dunno if its smart really tho there isnt much i cant take on on this low lvl.
and the potions are there to be used, not taking the advantage of having a lower defense and instead take h-potions is kinda stupid.
im all in for attack is best defense (so far :))

well if u like dual wield ( wich i do ) more than shield u should use it but u need to go for max skill tree at dual wield
becouse at the end ul have about 75% chances to dual ( 8D )

I prefer dual wield, but that's just my playing style. Both will work well.
how does dual wield work? Is it your first and secondary weapon that are beeing used?
KingGoop

well .. instead of a shield in your second hand you have a weapon. You equip the second weapon like you would equip the shield.
