Adrenaline triggers

Could an attack blocked by your shield cause Adrenaline to trigger? Is it nessisary for an attack to make contact or could a missed attack also cause Adrenaline to activate?

By the way, if you're suffering from a DoT such as bleed or poison, each second counts as a hit.
