People on these forums talk a LOT about gear, and the way they talk about it can make you think you gotta have it to do well. Truth is, you can pwn the game without any of this sweet gear, and you'll prolly have more fun doing it to. The game is easy, and the good gear just makes it easier; you're sort of gyping yourself out of the best part of the game.
