I had this kind of character as my first too. When i first discovered the coredweller, i was amazed. Really good pet, maybe the best in the whole game except maybe for the storm pet, which for some odd reason I can't remember the name of.

Don't worry about that 5 enemies-2 potions thing. Melee characters use potions a lot only early in the game. Once you get enough skills and good gear then you'll drink them a lot less and in fact they'll be accumulating in your inventory.
Battlemage and Harbinger are relatively similar because they both dual wield and cast things. However Battlemage is a very pet-dependent class, Harbinger is not. Conqueror is a very strong class and one of least gear-dependent classes in the game, but it can get very boring because most skills are passives. Yes Battlemage is a hard class when it comes late game, but it's doable. I completed legendary only once so far and that was with the battlemage.
