Default IGN Review 8.1

http://pc.ign.com/articles/714/714552p1.html

Not bad at all, but I'm not sure I agree with some of the reviewers thoughts. But their his opinions, not mine. I guess, since IronLore compared it to D2, we're going to see constant D2 comparisons. Fans of D2 will be biased, and those who are sick of D2 will love TQ most likely.

It's a good review, he just wishes it was more Diablo-like... I guess he'll be waiting for Diablo 3 then. Me? I'll pick this up now, and D3 when it comes out in 2010.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but he didn't seem to mention the editor... that's one of the key components... did I miss a blurb he might have said about it?

His comments are somehow... disturbing. Like saying he didn't find the difficulty scaling, well, he surely must not have gone to epic

As for the loot tables looking global for the all difficulty settings, well, I don't know where he get that from, as surely you still get cracked and regular items later on, but they are no longer those iron knife you find at start. And the epic you can find at the beginning might be of good use for you for maybe 15 levels if you were very lucky, but not more, truely. As for the comment about legendary items... hum... He surely doesn't know he has no chance at all to find them in normal difficulty (only from near the end of epic).

He didn't even mention the WYSIWYG drop system, which is quite weird as well (maybe he didn't pay enough attention?)

Quote:
Rather than rehashing another Medieval escapade, TQ takes us to the ancient world, and you'll have adventured across Greece, Egypt and China before you've finally become the hero (or heroine) of the day. It might take you as many as 40 hours to quest your way through to the final encounter, but there isn't as much variety as in its action-RPG counterparts, nor did I find loot distribution as satisfying.
I truely wonder what's the variety he finds in Diablo compared to TQ, 'cause from my decent play time, well, TQ has much more variety

Anyway, still interesting to read, and at least he acknowledges he's prolly biased in his article.

He indeed didn't mention the editor. Maybe was he too focused on comparing with D2 (only one way, taking D2 features and checking in TQ), and didn't even think to look about it?

Not bad overall, I didn't agree with some of his viewpoints and opinions, but he seemed to be looking for a replica of "The Game That Must Not Be Mentioned" with pretty graphics and real-world physics, just like a lot of the negative-posters here have been. I'm surprised he didn't mention the lack of closed-servers though, as I think that is something that is going to effect a lot of reviews of TQ, even though it isn't that important to most of us.

He did briefly mention the editor (sorta) when he was talking about the boring and repetitive maps ... lol

"While custom-crafted maps can allo for more eye-pleasing environments..."

I think most of the reviews are going to be 50/50 as far as liking it or loving it. Maybe I'll see whyt so many people think randomization is such a big deal for replayability, to me it's still the same thing only different, you know? More often than not I was annoyed by the randomization when doing Mephisto runs and such ... TQ more than makes up for it with the incredibly powerful editor and very deep class/skill system. I'm sure some reviews will make this point and score the game accordingly.

Anyways, we'll have to see what the game is like next week, I for one have never felt such anticipation for a game in a very long time, possibly ever, and I doubt I'll be dissappointed.

PS: Man I ramble on and on when I've been drinking ...

EDIT: Yeah Gorkk, he really failed to mention most of the features in TQ that make you forget about "The Game That Must Not Be Mentioned" ... and from what I know about the game a lot of his information isn't quite accurate, or at least uninformed. Seems like he didn't play the game for too long, I expect better form IGN

His review makes the game sound pretty mediocre. It's like he gave it an 8.1 because there aren't many better games coming this summer.

No, that refers to static polished maps vs tiles to auto generate maps like in D2. Obviously when you have a static map, you can make it looks nicer than when you design parts of the maps and then the parts will be pseudo-randomly assembled to generate a "random" map ('cause in D2 maps were not that random, any one doing meph runs without maphack to find the stairs from the TP knows it ).

And as you said, I don't really see the point of "randomisation", it only pushes people to get things like map hack out [/quote]

An "Impressive" rating is just that, "Impressive". Very few games can make that claim. I'm very impressed with Titan Quest and I plan on playing many, many hours!

Remember, a few art critics nitpicked the Mona Lisa when she was painted! Look at her now!

First, let me state for the record:
I thought D2 was a good game, and enjoyed playing it for awhile. I would prolly have played it longer if it was more editable and came with an editor. This, atleast, I find TQ to be superior to D2 in.

And so..

I found the review to be pretty inline with my initial impressions from the demo. This game is going to be compared to D2, because they are very similar. However, I agree with his overall theme. D2 came out 6 years ago, you'd expect the genre to have made some great leaps and bounds..

Instead its more like the automotive industry. The all new 2006 car is the exact same as the all new 2005 car with extra side airbags and a 12 disk cdplayer.

I also found the loot to be a bit... bleh. Most of the stuff that drops is broken items.. they sell for what? 1 gold? They arn't even worth the inventory space. I also hope there is more to spend gold on, because there wasn't that much in the demo ( items from bosses were about the only good drops.. )

Well, just my thoughts.

That's all well and good (really)

But let's remember that we're baseing our opinion on just the demo.(TONS of broken items) vs his seemingly limited time with the GOLD version.

The true test regardless of reviews will be on Monday (Tuesday for some heh) when we all get a hold of the real game.

Let's hope that our expectations based only on the demo have nowhere else to go but up!!!

That's my hope and prediction!

Have a GOOD Weekend All!!

PS - "D2 came out 6 years ago, you'd expect the genre to have made some great leaps and bounds.."

Ok, fine we need leaps and bounds in the Action RPG Formula...what would he or anyone else suggest? We have upgraded graphics, good storyline, nice atmospheric music...

TQ was made with a specific Vision in mind, a certain gameplay and feel. It (seems) that it will live up to that vision completely. What it won't live up to is all the people wanting a different game. Play it for what it is and enjoy the ride!

This coming from a person (if you go back) that had his own share of requests/suggestions/wants...till I was told by the Dev's this is the way it's gonna be. From there you either look at what you have and apperciate it or you wait for something you "hope" might be better.

I prefer to play now what's before me and appreciate it for what IT is...what comes later I'll play LATER!

/woot I'll be at my local Gamestop @10 am for my reserved copy...excited me heh

This is precisely my point. He didn't seem to go into any detail about the game. When even with IGN a crap game with like a 6.5 score will get a 3 page review, this one gets an 8.1 with only 2 pages that don't really explain his views except for... I like Diablo 2 better, a-dur-hur.

I respect IGN's vault sites, and their Nintendo press as well as their other console stuff, but I am hating their PC reviewers more and more as they seem to never really review the game for all its nooks and crannies and instead give bland generalizations. I hope they're getting paid crap wages for crap work. Give me that job and I'd ramble on for pages on every game I reviewed because I know the people that are reading the damn things WANT TO KNOW AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE BEFORE PURCHASE. Thank god most folks just look at the score and an 8.1 will likely help sales. Heh.
