I don't have one, and below in 'Posting Rules' it says 'You may not edit your posts'?
Oh, well. Here it is.... Genre Score: A- Overall Score: B+ General Description: Titan Quest is a role playing game for the PC released in 2006 featuring educational facts and problem solving. The story is a fictional blend of mythology, history and adventure that takes place in ancient Greece, Egypt and Asia. Names of great figures from history, literature and science are woven into the game and non player characters occasionally recite abbreviated versions of popular myths. The main problem solving challenge is for the gamer to continually optimize their hero with better skills and equipment so the hero can accomplish increasingly difficult quests necessary to save the world from Titans, ancient forerunners of the classic Greek gods. Rating Details: Classroom Facts Titan Quest contains many classroom facts, especially for a role playing game which are usually fictional adventures. Most events in Titan Quest take place in ancient Greece, Egypt and Asia, with a few basic maps provided for long distance travel. The gamer leads their hero on quests through fictional historic recreations of cities and explores historic and non-historic wonders, monuments, temples, caverns, villages, and the countryside while fighting groups of monsters, many from mythology. Non player characters (NPCs) found in cities and the countryside offer quests, contribute to the story line, and sometimes make small talk. Their discussions include mention of cities, figures and events both historical and/or mythological. For example, one NPC recounted a brief version of the popular myth of Daedalus, who designed the labyrinth beneath Knossus and who (with his son Icarus) escaped confinement in a tower on wings bound by wax. In Titan Quest special weapons, armor and items in the game have acquired magical properties from legendary historic persons who used them. This logic permits great figures from history, literature and science to be mentioned by name, and sometimes the magic they imparted to an object is in some way related to what made the individual famous. For example, our original test hero fought for a while wearing Oedipus’ armor and used a shield upgraded with Archimedes Mirror. We also collected essences such as Dionysus Wineskin and Hecate’s Crescent to upgrade equipment. Sometimes the lengths taken to borrow from history surprised us. A temple on the Greek island of Crete is adorned with statues of the snake goddess, which GRADE recognized as based upon rare figurines first discovered by Sir Arthur Evans in 1903 on the island of Crete. The columns on the temple are narrower at the base that at the top, a distinctly Minoan column that someone at Iron Lore Entertainment went to great length to duplicate. Creativity and Imagination By the Gamer: Character creation is a bare bones choice of male or female in a single neutral skin color and an optional choice of tunic color. Where the gamer begins to get creative is when they chose their hero’s "masteries" which is like selecting a character class. There are eight different masteries that increase attributes and provide a skill tree. Up to two masteries may be chosen. Considering that the gamer can be successful with any of the possible combinations of mastery, the choice is entirely creative, whatever pleases the gamer. The gamer can also work their way creatively up the skill trees, assigning points to their masteries or to the individual skills within a mastery. The role play story line and routing is mostly linear, however, there are a few optional side quests to be accomplished and caverns to be explored. By the Developer: Iron Lore Entertainment has taken the hugely successful mechanics of the classic role playing game, refined and freshened them, created a new system of masteries and skills, and cast them in a saga rich with mythology and lore. GRADE especially likes the blending of classroom facts into what is traditionally a pure fantasy genre. The developer, Iron Lore Entertainment, did an excellent job of blending aspects of the real world into their role playing game. Titan Quest contains the typical wealth of components that makes a role playing game fun and deep, with unique masteries & skills, armor & weapons in the thousands, and lots of great mythological monsters. Business Skills Buying, selling and dealing with items of value is a central part of Titan Quest. The gamer equips their hero with weapons, shields, two rings, a necklace, and armor pieces for the chest, arms, legs and head. Merchants in the game buy and sell those items at fixed prices in coin. Merchants will buy any item a hero offers for sale, but they are out to make a profit so merchants always sell items for a higher price than they will offer to pay. The coin value that a merchant offers is a rough indicator of the items usefulness in the game, though special properties of an item may make it more useful to a specific hero. Items made from better materials and with better magic qualities always cost more. Trade among live players in mulitplayer mode is not for fixed prices and coins and items can be mixed and exchanged in any combination. Wealth is acquired by gathering dropped loot from fallen adversaries for sale to merchants. The monsters drop whatever equipment they were using, so there is lots of loot to gather and sell. Merchants also sell health and energy potions that can be used to quickly refresh the hero and can be especially useful in battle against rugged boss monsters. Relics and charms can be collected and attached to items for an upgrade. If the gamer lacks the right match of relics and items to make a powerful upgraded item, they can sometimes purchase the right item from a merchant, rather than carry the relics around in the hero’s pack hoping the next monster will drop a weapon or armor to combine with the relics. People Skills Titan Quest can be played in multiplay mode by LAN and Online with up to seven gamers, who can play as individuals or in a party sharing wealth and experience. Multiplay follows the same story line as single player mode, except with more than one player. The gamer’s hero can be moved between single and multiplay games. The variety in masteries and skills makes Titan Quest a good game for multiplayer, because gamers whose heroes have complimentary abilities can band together. For that same reason gamers of different skill levels, (that’s the gamer’s ability not their heroes), can band together, with stronger players assisting weaker players and everyone having something useful to contribute. A trade window is provided for orderly trade between gamers. Both gamers must accept the trade for the trade to become final. Typed chat is available to communicate with allies and it is easy for multiple players to combine their tactics. Problem Solving Problem solving in Titan Quest centers around two related problems, optimization and the strategy and tactics of defeating foes. Optimization is the constant upgrading of equipment and skills to keep the hero as powerful as possible. As the gamer progresses in the game the challenges become tougher. To keep pace with those challenges a gamer’s hero must be frequently ungraded. Part of the fun in Titan Quest is for the gamer to win loot that improves their hero. Gamers continually evaluate the material and qualities of items they find in the field, seeing if they are better than the gear already used by there hero and considering whether the loot is worth carting back to a merchant for its sale value. Whether an item can actually upgrade the gamer’s hero isn’t always obvious. It depends on the gamer’s strategy, which involves their hero’s masteries and ability points, as well as the new item’s specific material and magic qualities. Keeping a hero at peak performance is an ongoing problem that requires lots of tweaking. In Titan Quest the gamer’s hero is tasked to defeat a string of deadly evil monsters and Titans, which is accomplished by leading the optimized hero into battle. Titan Quest permits game saving and provides rebirth fountains as locations to resume play, still, nobody wants their hero to die. The only way to safeguard humanity and save the day is to create an overall strategy for optimization and then apply sound tactics against large groups of tough looking monsters. The gamer forms their overall strategy early on, when they select their hero’s two masteries at levels 2 and 8 and as they begin spending level points to enhance those masteries and develop skills. The strategy is further enhanced during hero optimization by equipping items that work well with the hero’s masteries and skills. With the hero optimized to the best of the gamer’s ability, the challenge is one of battle tactics, learning how to fight and defeat different adversaries of increasing difficulty. The gamer’s hero is rarely powerful enough to charge into the middle of a group of monsters and survive. Consistently progressing through the game requires patience and planning ahead. Tactics evolve as the hero evolves, new items are equipped and new monsters appear. The different tactical challenges are central to Titan Quest and a continual source of problem solving and enjoyment. Simulation The loot system sets Titan Quest apart from other role playing games. In Titan Quest monsters only drop what they were using. The gamer doesn’t have to suspend logic, as in many other games, when a mindless animal suddenly drops a shield, a rare gem or something else that no wild animal would ever possess. What’s more, every monster that uses an item in Titan Quest drops it when they die, just like in the real world. GRADE read one review of Titan Quest where the reviewer complained of too much loot on the ground. We sympathize with the reviewer’s desire for an uncluttered screen, however, we like the realism that when a monster dies its gear doesn’t suddenly vanish. We also like that we can recognize an interesting item used by a monster and defeat that monster to win the item. Also, Titan Quest uses a day/night cycle, good shadow effects and contains fine visual detail, including grass that sways in the breeze. Popularity Titan Quest is earning favorable reviews from both critics and fans. GRADE is pleased to note that the fans, like us, enjoy the mythology blended into the game. Tips Titan Quest is often compared to Diablo II a classic role playing game. There are many similarities between the two, but to GRADE the biggest difference is that Titan Quest contains many classroom facts from mythology, history and literature, while the story and content of Diablo II are mostly fictional. Both games contain business skills and problem solving. GRADE found the Titan Quest game manual to be extremely well written, packed with information and easy to understand. Thank you |
