The biggest thing that I can say, to increase performance, is to upgrade the video card. I know what you're going to say, though. Sure, if I had $300 to spend on a new video card, I would have already done it.
Here's the kicker, though, you can get 3-4 generation old, high-end, cards for $50. I've purchased multiple things from hardforum.com for sale threads. A lot of these guys are always getting the next big thing, so their old next big thing is for sale. A radeon 9800pro will do 70fps in 800x600 with everything off. That's with an old barton athlon. This card is now 6 generations old and it's getting those framerates.
At the moment, you can pick up a radeon x1950xtx for $50. This is a pci-e solution, but there are agp cards available, too.
I'm getting ready to buy, at least, 1 agp card for an old shuttle xpc. It will be upgrading a radeon 9000 that gets around 30fps in 800x600 with everything off. So, for <$50 I'll double-plus my fps. That's a worthwhile investment to me.

..also overclocking of yur existing vga is doing good job-and TQ seems pretty resistant to artifacts at higher clocks than other games or 3dmark

btw. whats your average fps through titan quest?? is there any benchmark for TQ???

It depends on the computer. My laptop (c2d 2.0gh, x1700, 2gb ram), vanilla tq, new game, standing at beginning...
50-59fps
1024x768, high, medium, medium, medium
50-59fps
1400x900, low, low, low, low
15-19fps
1400x900, high, high, high, high, antialiasing
This is using fraps to benchmark.

59fps probably means you have flat monitor and VSync on, which is ok.

Nope...
Average was 56. Plus, tq doesn't enable vsync with the default button. Tqit does, though.
Now, I tested with tqit fanpatch and got these...
45-60fps
1024x768, high, medium, medium, medium
75-85fps
1400x900, low, off, low, low
18fps
1400x900, high, high, high, high, (all checked except vsync)
My guess is turning that one option from low to off in tqit is what gives the extra fps. I'd rather have full resolution and low quality than low resolution and high quality.
I've also found that I can enable certain things without a big hit in performance, so play around with one option at a time and see what works best for each computer.
With that, fps takes a hit at night. If I'm getting 75fps during the day, I'll usually get 65 at night.

For the most part my game runs rather smoothly. But for some reason no matter what computer I'm on, I always lag at one part of the first level of the Athenian Catacombs. Is this a known issue, or is it just my luck?

Every now and then, especially at one place on the gorgon run, it comes to a dead stop for about 3 seconds and then jumps to another part of the screen.
I don't think tq is the most well-coded program. It certainly is good, though.

Well, I just installed my new old x800pe agp and 10.2 drivers. Here are my findings, again this is an athlon 2500+...

TQ:
63fps - 800x600 Low
48fps - 800x600 High
65fps - 1600x1200 Low
33fps - 1600x1200 High

TQIT:
78fps - 800x600 Low
48fps - 800x600 High
74fps - 1600x1200 Low
34fps - 1600x1200 High

That's a good performance upgrade, for $40, over the radeon 9000 that it replaced. It gets similar speed to the 9800pro, that was artifacting, at 800x600. That's largely a cpu bottleneck, I would assume.
When my $40 x1950xtx pci-e comes in I'll do another benchmark that includes 1400x900, for a direct comparison to my laptop's x1700.

I just installed my new, used, radeon x1950xtx. It has a celeron 2.66gh. Note that the same computer with a radeon 2400pro (low end card) got around 30fps at 800x600 low.
With that being said, the athlon 2500+ (1.88gh), with the x800pe, doubled that score. That shows how much better the older athlon is than the newer, much faster, celeron.
I'm getting ready to replace the celeron with a p4. I'll post more results later.
JJ

TQ:
40fps - 800x600 low
30fps - 800x600 high
36fps - 1400x900 low
18fps - 1400x900 high
35fps - 1600x1200 low
30fps - 1600x1200 high
