Default Running TQIT on Portable USB Hard Drive

Hello,

after my laptop crashed i recently installed all my games on my portable Seagate Hard Drive. I installed both Titan Quest and TQ: Immortal Throne on my "games folder" ("F:/Games/Titan Quest" and "F:/Games/Titan Quest Immortal Throne") but when ever I run TQ:IT, it says that I have to install Titan Quest first before I run it. Any idea how I can fix this problem, preferably without reinstalling the two programs?

Go into your registry and check out the installation paths and see if they're right. I've installed Titan Quest and Immortal Throne on my external hard drives before and had to tweak something somewhere to get it to work.

TQIT is checking your registry to see where vanilla TQ is installed, since you didn't "Install" it on that PC, your registry was not populated with the correct values.

This is my registry export:

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Iron Lore]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Iron Lore\Titan Quest]
"LastMutexOwner"=dword:00000001
"CD Key"="***********"
"Install Location"="c:\\program files\\steam\\steamapps\\common\\titan quest"
"version"="1.300000"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Iron Lore\Titan Quest Immortal Throne]
"RanOnce"=dword:00000001
"CD Key"="************"
"Install Location"="c:\\program files\\steam\\steamapps\\common\\titan quest immortal throne"
You may have to replace the ********* with your actual CD key, I edited mine out, for obvious reasons :P

You will need to have those values in your registry and the filepaths correct for it to work on a HDD, copy that code up there, and paste it into notepad (or any text editor), edit the filepaths so they are pointing to the correct place, then save it as "tqit.reg", without the quotes of course. Then run the file, and it should put those keys in your registry.

@ Victor: do i need to have the Registry editor installed on the computer I'm connecting my USB drive to, or can it be installed inside my USB drive as well? and also since i hook up my USB drive to any computer on campus, which change on a daily basis, do i need to do the registry editting every time i switch computers? or is this a shot thing?

also it would be nice if you could recommend me a registry editor that works, to save me time from reading forums and researching online.. thanx so much, i was completely "in the dark" till u posted this. im not so proficient with tweaking my system. you rock

Your USB drive doesn't have a registry, the registry is what lets the computer you are on, know where everything is at. When you run TQIT, it asks the computer where TQ is installed, and the computer doesn't know. (Because it doesn't have the registry value)

When you install the game normally, the installer will create those registry values for you, as well as install the rest of the files to play the game.

If you are playing on school computers, you may not be able to change any registry settings, but it depends on what sort of security is on the computers.

Copy the code I posted above, and paste it into notepad. Change the "CD Key" and "Install Location" to where your TQ is at. (Where it is on your USB drive when it is connected)

Click save, and type tqit.reg as the filename. (.reg tells the computer to save it as a registry file, so you can name it anything as long as it ends in .reg) You should save this on your USB drive, since you will need to run it if the computer you are on doesn't know where TQ is installed.

Once you have it saved, go to where you saved it, and you should see it there, make sure that your filepath in that file is correct, since it may change when you go to other computers.

When you are sure it is correct, double click it, and it will put those values into your registry, and then TQIT should work. If it still doesn't work, you might have gotten the filepath wrong.

Note: The filepath needs to have two \'s between each "folder" in that registry file.
(I.E. c:\program files\steam\steamapps\common\titan quest needs to be c:\\program files\\steam\\steamapps\\common\\titan quest in that file.)

okay, i just found out that i can't use run > regedit on the school computers due to lack of admin privs, so i guess installing immortal throne on my portable is not an option. so im just gonna have to be contented playing vanilla TQ for the moment

that being said, i found myself in another dilemma. i run TQ and it runs perfectly fine with all the intro movie and all. but when i get to the "main menu" when i try to click Play Game, Custom Game and even freakin Options. I get the freaking Invalid CD-key message. I used the same key for when I played TQ before, but now I use a no-cd cracked exe. to run the game (more specifically, i updated to v1.30, then downloaded a no-cd crack, i also had to download dx3d9_27.dll separately from another source to run the game). Is this another registry issue? or is it just the no-cd crack im using? in the first place, the game wouldn't install anyways if the CD was indeed invalid. a lil' help on this one please... a lil' bit more and i'll raise the WHITE FLAG and just play another game while w8ing for my laptop to be fixed.
