Slowdown upon monster highlight

Playing fully updated TQIT with latest NVIDIA drivers. Geforce 8800GT 512MB RAM, Athlon X26000, 2GB PC6400 RAM.

When I am in a building or cave, when I mouseover a monster (this highlights the monster), when the "detail" setting under the video options is set to medium or high, all animation slows to what seems to me to be about a third of the speed.

When detail is set to low, there is no (detectable?) slowdown. And when detail is set to high, but all other options set to low, the slowdown remains and is just as severe.

I think the slowdown is a little better when detail is set to medium, but it remains severe and detectable under both medium and high settings.

Oddly, outside of buildings and caves, whether it is dark or light, there is no slowdown at any detail level.

Any suggestions?

Do detail settings even affect anything visible underground? I'm basically happy just to turn the setting to low when underground. As far as I can tell it makes no visual difference. But it would be even better if I didn't have to do this.

Isn't SP1 supposed to automatically come to me, as it were?

I didn't realize I had to go download it, I thought it would be an automatic update.

It's supposed to be automatic but your dxdiag is not showing SP1 so I assumed you, like me, turned them off.

I've heard bad things about the .19 drivers, so that may help you out more than SP1.

Weird, I don't have auto updates turned off--in fact, I get them all the time. They automatically install at 3PM every night.

Also, I just tried to update my driver. I downloaded the new one. I clicked on the icon. It got about halfway through--and then my monitor stopped recieving any signal.

My computer sat reading the hard drive for about 10 minutes (no more or less than usual as far as I can tell) before I finally, with trepidation in my heart, turned it off, waited a few seconds, and turned it on again.

Everything seems to be okay. Dxdiag says the driver version is still the old one. I have no idea how to check whether registry entries were changed or anything. Geez.
