But I've read a few too many times (from Microsoft MVPs and others) about the quirky way WinXP handles its virtual mem settings (hey, it's Windows). It seems to expect a variable setting on C: otherwise, under rare circumstances, it'll flake out and do weird things, ignoring the same min/max swap file setting.

Seems like the safest bet is to create a variable page file on C: while simultaneously creating a permanent page file on a separate drive.
I've never had a problem and with that info you have to check the date as depends on patches/fixes and service packs you are running as things get fixed and changed all the time.

For gameing i never patch windows XP other than SP2 and so far never had a single fault. Though I have a PC for just game no internet or other connections to worry about.

Do you have Service Pack 2 and all the other updates? I'm running XP Pro, SP2 + updates and I can create a file bigger than 4 gig.

Not sure why you can't have a file bigger than 4 gigs.

Are you running XP 64-bit or 32-bit?

Ya know, I'll have to check tonight to see if I can make bigger than 4 gig files. I'm running 32 bit XP but I'm sure I've d/led bigger files than 4 Gigs.

Hey Merlin,

Yeah I'm running Win XP Pro 32 Bit with SP2 and all the updates. Starting to wonder if it has to do with my mobo. It's a Gigabyte - model (blabla) <--not sure I'm at work. Socket 478 p4 with HT the max of physical memory it can handle is 4 gig. Maybe that has something to do with it?

I'm running a ASUS P4B 533 that holds a max of 4 gigs ram. The amount of RAM you can install has nothing to do with the file size you can create.

Ok I was sort of right about the max page file size being 4096 meg, I did some searching and found a work around right on the MS website. It gives a brief reason why 4096 is the max (x86 processors) and explains how to increase the page file size. It also mentions that Windows 2003 server can have a larger page file. Further down in the article it mentions Win XP can not have an increased page file but then explains how you can make mutliply page files on one drive for Win XP.

Link How to overcome the 4,095 MB paging file size limit in Windows

I haven't tried it, just found it, so good luck to those who do and please let us know how you made out.

In response to Merlin's Tech 101 LOL, hmmmm.... Sir is your computer plugged in?!
