Hybrid Game Format
This week's headline post questioning if maybe TQ/IT is "too easy" got me to thinking about RPGs in general and what I like and dislike about them. I was initiated in D & D on the first 64kb Texas Instrument (can't even remember the number, it has been so long ago). At any rate, Diablo sucked me in for good!
I have played many, many of the games including such noteables as Neverwinter Nights, Oblivion, Witcher, etc. TQ, for my money is far and away the best game I have ever loaded. I understand the vast number of gamers that love the above mentioned games that revolve around deep, sometimes dark, and often very complex story lines and quests, but have minimal action. Others, like TQ, focus on the action with nominal story lines and quests that are obviously there only to accomondate the action. It seems the industry mindset is either one or the other.
My suggestion to the Developers is: write a true RPG that has the best of both without overdoing/underdoing either. In other words, lots of action with the ability to truly develope your character, built on a story line that involves the character and his development without being boring and redundent. For example, don't give me 20 quests, related or unrelated, to deal with at one time!!! And don't stop the action just because I have to have interaction with NPCs that are an intregal part of the story.
