The ancient greeks are a mixture of Indo-European and native population. Some characteristics of Indo-Europeans is a high number of people with blonde hair and blue eyes. But these characteristics are recessive and might have vanished quite soon. But the heroic greek legends arose in the times or shortly after the Indo-European invasion. So probably quite a number of blondes might have been around at those days.

In my hypothesis the blonde only came from, er, "contact" with other white cultures such as Scandinavians. Gorgeous Scandinavian features would also explain why Helen was famous among the Greeks as the most beautiful woman in the lands -- the difference in her appearance would be exciting to most Greeks.

Yes, in classic greece the contact with northern cultures like the celts or the germans (incl. scandinavians) might explain the attractiveness of blond hair.

In my post I went back to the times when the Indo-Europeans (the blonde guys) invaded Europe (coming from asia) and the middle east and created new culteres while mixing with the native population producing the Greeks, Celts, Germans, Italians (incl. Romans), Persians, Hittites (as mighty as egypt for a while, invented iron weapons) etc.
In northern europe there has not been that much native population. So not that much to mix with. So they stayed quite blonde.

Bla Bla Bla. What I wanted to say is, that for quite a while in history, there probably have been quite noticable numbers of blonde people in greece till assimilated.

Though the gene for blond haircolor is recessive - it doesn't disappear. If there will be a population that is filled for one half with people with people who have brown hair genes and the other half with people who have blond hair genes, and you mix them up; the next generation will end up with approximately 75% brown haired people and 25% blond haired people. However, even after 1,000 generations this will stay equal and still 25% of the people will stay blond and 75% brown.
