I recently purchased Titan Quest during the steam sale. Though I have never played this game before I have a lot of experience with Diablo 2. I know that in Diablo 2 character builds were very important and optimization was necessary if you wanted to have any chance of taking on things in hell. While it seems not to be entirely the case for Titan Quest I still assume that there are some builds that work better than others.
My big question is what character type would be good at doing the following. -Able to solo the game. -Not gear dependent as I am new and have no real gear. -Can consistently farm to help me get gear for other characters I would like to make. -Easy to use and learn the strategies for. I thank you all greatly for your help and any links to guides would be appreciated. |

Conqueror (Warfare + Defence), Warden (Defence + Hunting), Harbinger (Warfare + Dream) and Templar (Dream + Defence) all fit the guidelines you've provided.
That's providing you like melee characters. I think some archer classes can satisfy those guidelines too. Not sure if mage characters can be gear-independent though, but perhaps someone else can give tips on those.

I would say you are right in that I think Titan Quest can be fairly forgiving of careless builds in normal, and even a bit in epic (skills don't have to be "just right") although certain combos don't even really work in normal (like choosing mage and putting all your points in Str).
The dream mastery is seriously powerful but more importantly, combines with many other masteries - so a good choice if you want an easy time for most of the game (but I would suggest Legendary can still be tough) and still allows different play styles. There are enough options I'd say first choose your preferred play style - melee or ranged/magic. Reallocation of attribute points is your friend too - e.g. for dual wield, I often wait till I have a high enough level (enough skill points) that I can reallocate and substantially fill the DW tree - trying to play dual wield with just a couple points in it is tough. Easier to stick with shield for the first while. One main thing is indeed to choose the correct attribute points for your chosen style (mage/ranged/melee)- these can't be reallocated. Str/Dex/Int. The masteries you select should sync with these. After that, you have some freedom to "fix things" later, and indeed at different stages of the game, some things are more important than others. I'm not sure Titan Quest is as hard as Diablo 2 - although I am slowed down now in Legendary Orient with my main level 62 Harbinger (a lot of concentration to do attacks on mobs in the right order and avoid certain boss attacks - so I prefer playing my lower level characters for now), I got stuck completely in Act 3 with my Traps Assassin (level 60-something too I think) in Diablo 2 Hell. It seemed *way* more difficult. But that was a bit of a tricky build IIRC. |

First thank you both for your replies. So my choices are Conqueror, Warden, Harbinger and Templar. Is there any other classes that would work for me?
Just to clarify the character I want to make is not going to be my main character but rather just someone I'll use to get gear for other characters that will be my mains. For this reason I really don't care if it's a melee/archer or caster as I would only be using it to get access to gear that will let me play characters I'll enjoy more. Again I really appreciate the information and if there are other classes that would work i would love to hear of them so i can know all my options before I choose. |

From the looks of it, you are looking to build a utility character (something to start off fast and lvl up so he will be able to get better gear for your future characters). If that's the case, you can't go wrong with Conqueror. Fast and easy to play and even without great gear, can take on Epic and Legendary just fine.
Once you develop him to high levels he is a fairly efficient boss farmer too, making it easy to get those blues/purples you want for your other toons. I know people will say there are more efficient and faster farmers out there, but I know that this class can start you up even with mediocre equipment. Other than the Conq. Matseb is spot on with his profession choices, htey are also very easy to make even without good gear.
