1.08 -> 1.30 Not working

I just did a clean install from the Disc, Applied the 1.01>1.08 and that worked fine, then I'm running the 1.08>1.30 patch and getting the usual "patch has encountered an error dialog. I'm not able to do in-game update as this is a standalone machine so I'm using these downloaded patches. The 1.01>1.30 fails with the same error (again, clean install) this is really frustrating only being able to update to 1.08. What on earth causes these errors with the patches? I've seen numerous threads about the problems and don't see a solution anywhere.
A friend of mine has the expansion pack, should I borrow that from him and install it? I've heard that it updates the game (does it go up to 1.30?) if I borrow it and install it and then uninstall it I might get somewhere?

IT udates TQ to version 1.30. You should try that if you can't get the patch to work.

By what method does it update? Is it likely to fail? also is installing it going to break my game when I give my friend his disc back?

it just automatically updates during the install of TQIT , failing
that Search for the stand alone V1.00 to V1.30 online and install that

Okay now I got the game up to 1.11 - but can't get any higher

and only the THQ patches work, not the iron lore ones, what's the difference and why do two companies make patches for the one game? I'm confused

ok now the 1.11>1.15 works but the 1.15>1.20 doesn't this is incredibly frustrating I have to say

What are the actual available version for both the original and the expansion?
From what I can tell 1.01 1.08 1.11 1.15 1.20 and 1.30 for the original and no idea on the expansion

and it patches you up to the expansion which when you install the exp will say Ver 1.1 or v1.01 or something like that
