Default d3d error?

So Diablo 3 is coming out, and I hadn't played a good RPG in awhile. But I was sick of D2. Then some friends told me Titan's Quest was better. After reading some reviews, I raced to three gamestops to find a copy for the weekend. Installed it. The d3 error. Tried running the DirectX install off of the disc, nothing really happened. It said files updated, but it was really quick.

So then I get crafty, and start searching the internet for files. I've probably found 3 or 4 that actually have worked so far. The one I'm stuck on now though is DevIl.dll. And yes, I know what I'm trying is desperate, but I really really want to play this game. I've tried searching multiple forums, and no luck.

My belief is that since I have Windows Vista, with that fancy DX 10, it won't update it, since this uses 9. Any help that doesn't include installing XP? Thanks guys/gals, I'm really excited to start playing! Hopefully by the weekend?

Sorry, I figured more information about my computer would be useful. I was worried about my video card, this being a laptop, but according to Will it Run? It should be fine. It's a ATI Radeon X1200. Thanks

What is XP toons and Defiler? Are they important? And it's not my video card, then?

Thank you!

Defiler is some program. Try searchign for TQDefiler and stuff.

I believe GWarrior is talking about taking a toon from Windows XP and playing it on Vista

Well, it appears both programs are something to use with you're characters... but I can't get in the game at all.

I've reinstalled the game now, no difference, so now I'm trying to update my video drivers. Any other advice?

TQDefiler is run outside of the game. You may be able to access your old toons and fix them with TQDefiler so that the game will be able to recognize them. It might be useful if you can get the game running.

I had no problem with running the game on my Vista system. It also runs on my laptop, but that's an XP system.

Have you tried installing dx 9 from the Microsoft site?

Ok... but I've never played this before. So wouldn't I not have a toon (I'm assuming toons are characters?)?

I realized that right after my initial post and was editing it when you posted.
