Default [READ ME FIRST]How to Ask for Modding Help

Step 1: Check Existing Knowledge Bank
Wiki: http://titanquest.wikia.com/index.ph...ecial:AllPages

Tutorial Forum: http://www.titanquest.net/forums/tutorials/

Modding Guide 101: http://www.titanquest.net/forums/tut...ide-101-a.html

Common Questions: http://www.titanquest.net/forums/mod...tml#post335821
Many many questions are answered there, and there's a lot of background/fundamental info for you as well.

Step 2: Search

Advanced Search allows you to search with a number of criteria, including what sub-forums to limit your search to. Obviously, try and use select key words you think will be unique to the topic.

Step 3: Ask

If you have already exhausted step 1 and 2, feel free to post your question in this forum. Make sure to have a clear subject for your post, if not the question itself. If you want to know how to change skill classes, try to have a subject like "How to change skill class?" In the body of your post you can add more details. It's important to be clear and concise, but also include your efforts so far, like what you've already tried to get it to work. While you don't want to bog your post down with pointless information, like the fact that you were late for work, or hopped up on redbull at the time, it's good for other modders to see your process as sometimes that's where the problem truly is.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Notes:
  • Don't PM questions. if you have a question and you know that there is a particular modder who has the answer, then try your search again, but this time limit the results to only posts by that modder (helps to display results as posts, not subjects, to scan through lots of hits). If that doesn't work, then post your question in the public forums anyway. If said modder doesn't stop by your post after a day, it's ok to send them a 'heads up' PM with a link to the post. Unless that modder states they are willing to take PM questions (and I personally discourage this as then no one else gets the answer), assume otherwise.

  • Don't skip steps. You might be positive that no one has ever divined your question before, or you're just too lazy to search (or only perform one lazy search), but you will run out of cred quickly this way. You may think that's no big deal, but I promise you, you will have many questions down the line, either for the same mod, or one you want to do later; don't make your name synonymous "lazy asshat." And, no one falls for the hot-girl-who-joined-forum-just-to-ask-modding-question trick anymore (ok, a few of the guys still fall for this, lol).

  • Don't take it personally. If no one's responding to your post, send a pm or two out to modders you think might know the answer. If they don't respond, they might not be active in the community anymore, they might not know the answer, or they might be a weirdly secretive person. In all these cases, it has nothing to do with you. I've held the no-pm-questions policy for a few months now, and most modders get it no problem when I give them my form response in PM that basically says 'for the betterment of everyone, I no longer take PM questions.' I mean, it has been and still sometimes is a bad habit of mine--I don't like look down on anyone who asks a question in a PM. But, every now and then, someone is insulted by this, and they don't post their question publicly, or they let me know in a response that they hate me. I mean, insulting someone is prolly not a great way to get answers out of them. This doesn't mean you should frame all your questions with praise or anything, just don't take it personally.

  • Don't be lazy. Make an effort to figure things out. Having some searching chops certainly helps, and taking time to just look things over can sometimes answer your question, and simultaneously give you a better understanding of the tools than a specific answer to a specific question. I would say half the questions posted in these forums could have been answered with just a few minutes calmly looking over the related database records.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Now, it would be nice if, as a community, we could compile a list of frequently asked questions to be appended to this post. As you have time, please post links to the questions you can think of that get asked a lot so we can add them. Thanks.

Dear Modders, as you go about searching the forums, if you see a thread which is (or contains) a good tutorial on some aspect of modding, please take a moment to note it here so that it can be added to the knowledgebase.

Show some love. It's like bittorrent--if everyone just leeched, you'd never get your pr0n.

Interesting analogy.

Anyway, I'm still *extremely* new to modding, but this thread is helping me a lot.

It's about how to modify the existing skills. I know there's a guide for making whole new masteries, but for a starting point, this seems much simpler.
