When you install IT, you will be able to import characters from regular TQ into the expansion. It's one of the bars below your character select screen.
A conjurer has access to the lich and core dweller, two of the hardiest pets in the game. They should be taking the aggression and most of the damage from mobs, leaving you free to take potshots at monsters from a distance. I will literally send both pets right into the middle of a mob and cast volcanic orb from across the screen every now and then. If I'm at a closer range, I use ternion and eruption to make short work of everything so long as they're still focused on my pets.
Always keep heat shield active for the damage resistance. Also, do you use stone form? Assign that to your RMB or an easy-to-reach hotkey. That should be your panic button whenever your character is in danger. A pretty devious trick is to cast eruption, then stone form yourself right on top of it; any mob that comes toward you will be dead in seconds. Vision of Death can also help keep mobs off you and your pets.
And since most casters have crappy DA anyways, I just try to bump up my armor protection a bit through relics. It might also be good to use gear/artifacts/skills that provide % less damage from certain monster types. This will be even more useful in IT act 4, which is loaded with demons. My conjurer's stuff cuts damage from demons in half, so if a spear runner usually crit hits me for 1300-1600, all in all I only take about 350-400 dmg from that. Much more manageable.
