Default Templar stats and weapon

How important is Dex for a melee fighter (Templar in this case)? Should I just get enough to wear axes and pump the other points into str for damage? Or should I get more dex, so my Off/Def ratings don't drop too low?

And a related question: what weapon class should I focus on as a Templar? Swords, axes or maces?

Templars doesn't require specific weapon but spears/maces would give more benefit to phantom strike that you can one shot almost anything.

Dex only for the gear you plan to wear. Strength is easy to increase endgame with lots of mods from gear and artifacts, 800-1000+ str is easy to get so you can't be wrong even if you put alot of dex.

How important are offensive and defensive rating though? And is it better to increase those with dex or with items?

1 attribute = 4 DEX = 4 OA & DA, so take the math. It takes 1700 DA to get almost immune to melee and 1000 OA or DA to crit or not to get crit. I dont think you will have enough dex to get those figures.

You can check a post that is stickied next to the knowledge thread if you want more indepth coverage of OA and DA... it has been learned that they are more important than what we first believed...

Heh I guess so. They were thought to be relatively unimportant when I first played.

Yeah, but DA turns out to actually decrease dmg on its own... so super naked plus + high DA makes you not only dodge melee attacks but when you do get hit it makes the blows softer to take...
I think OA still sucks, but I actually opt to put points in dex instead of str on my pierce builds for the extra survivability with a slight increase to pierce damage.

You want to shoot for these items with your templar if you can get them.

I have extras of a few of the items in the bank if you need them - I've done lots of farming.

head: visor of the shadowlord
chest: armor of peleus
arms: stonebinder cuffs of alacrity
legs: barbarian spiked greaves/athena battle greaves

weapon: scepter of the shadow king/sapros the corrupter
shield: aionios
artifact: book of dreams? (it's what I'm using).

Send me a PM if you want me to help you out.

As far as STR/DEX are concerned I think I have about 580str vs 400 dex at the moment.

Those item recommendations are looking pretty good. Using Athena's Battle Greaves atm, and farming for SBC of Alacrity. I'll probably try to find Batrachos Greaves though, not even necessarily with a good affix. And I might go for Zeno's as shield.

Most of the items you posted are very highlevel things though, so I guess I'll at least need to get to Typhon to farm for them. I'll need to try Hydra though, if I can kill it in a decent amount of time I can also farm it.

And thanks for the offer, but I'll rather get all items I need myself. Accepting gifts feels like cheating. You could tell me which bosses you farmed for that stuff though, and at what level you got them. I'm only 61 so far, so my drops would be a little worse than yours I guess.

You might try to concentrate on getting the attack speed to 200%. At this level, your passive shield attacks become very frequent -- more frequent than your primary weapons (sword, axe, club etc...). Mostly I like the Saber Sword (samurai look alike) dropped from the Tigerman. It has a great speed attack.
