"Clay" colored? Clay can vary quite a bit in color depending on the source. The real terracotta soldiers from China are often a greenish-gray color rather than the bright red that you may be thinking about. Also, when they were originally made they appear to have been painted in various colors. (Similar to ancient Greek statuary.)

Not much of an action shot, but it does illustrate the range of Study Prey when you Shift-click it.



It's useful on Xmax when you come up against multiple bosses (Minotaur Lord, Rhakotis Library Beetle, Fayum Scorpion boss, Gray Sisters, Cerberus, etc) that you might prefer to fight from the doorway than inside the boss chamber itself.
