Can't Complete "Among the Ruins" side quest

I've run this problem by a different TQ forum but they weren't able to help and I'm hoping someone here can. Weird problem which I never experienced anything similar to while playing TQ (pre-Immortal Throne): I'm going thru the side quest "Among the Ruins" where you have to rescue five groups of villagers (which is the number given in the walkthroughs I've looked at) in the city of Paseron. You defeat the monsters guarding each group of villagers and the villagers then run to the front gate of Paseron, apparently free. The problem is that even after I free all five groups of villagers, I'm never allowed to end the quest. After I free them all, I expect Theogenes' exclamation point to change back to yellow so he can thank me for freeing the villagers and give me experience points and a prize, but it never changes. All he continues to tell me is that someone has to guard my escape route, or some such. I've gone through it about a dozen times, freeing the villagers in different orders, escorting them back to the front gate, killing all the monsters as fast as I can without escorting the villagers, whatever, but all with the same (lack of) results. I've even gone back to Epirus to see if Epigenes (who was the first one to tell me about the quest) has anything to say, but no luck. The only thing I've noticed is that some of the villagers I freed have some sort of green aura around them and some don't. Any idea what I need to do? Are all the villagers supposed to have that green aura (or not)? If so, how do I make them have it (or not)? I hate to pass this side quest without completing it, but I'm getting pretty tired of killing the same monsters over and over (even though I'm racking up the gold with all the high-powered weapons I'm picking up as a result). i dont know ive never had a problem with this quest . your definetley freeing all the prisoners ?

Thanks for the reply! I don't know. I've freed 5 groups of villagers. The only information I can find confirms there are 5 groups. Unless the walkthroughs I've seen on this are mistaken, I don't know what else to try. The radar map thing in the upper right corner of the screen doesn't show any more villagers to go to after I free the last group. Unless there's a group of villagers in the "bowels" of the city that the radar isn't picking up and I'm just missing, I'm stumped.

someone on the titan quest vault forums said that there are around 8 groups

All the groups are around that town square area, it seems to me as though you are clearing them all.
Having not had a problem here, I don't know what to advise. It's not a Steam version, is it?

Batman: I don't know what the "Steam" version is, which probably indicates that mine isn't. Assuming it's a specially marketed edition, I'm sure I don't have it. It's a regularly boxed edition, bought in the store and not packaged with anything else.

I got this on my 2nd character. Same thing. I freed all the villagers, but I cannot complete the quest. That really sucks, because I hate not getting the XP. I've skipped it for now.
