I total ran past them a couple times... I couldnt find either shard and I was getting ticked... when The boss is so close I'm like a magnetic... I just had to go kill him, though once I saw one I assumed that there was going to be a second on the other side...

No, it's just a relic to complete; but I have a Legendary Shard that gives me 20% vitality resistance plus +5% to strength, dex, and intell. Nice but I can't justify using it in the face of some of the epic/legendary items out there.

He meant the "Shards of Erebus" which have to be destroyed in order to complete the quest or "Crystal of Erebus" ?

Not that I know of, however the one in normal gave me 20% in alla primary resistances and 30% in vitality res. The one in epic pretty much sucked and the one in legendary gave +2 all skills. I have no idea if it is random, I only have one character =D the bonuses were nice for me at least.

It's pretty much random(or a selected few attributes you can get).
Mine from normal has +1 to all skills
