add some points in health in attrib screen when you level, health is the key of falling death
 and use something to regenate health (potions, skills etc)

not the primary key though
you can have 10.000 health and loose it faster than someone who has only 5.000 various resistances, armor rating, avoid, dodge. i'm pro adding points to health, but not too much

unique (blue, later purple) items are the best if it comes to resists

Don't forget charms, relics, artifacts. Some monster infrequent items have nice resitances.

It can save your life every now and then.
Life leech and vitality resistances are added together in the character screen. However they are separate damage types. Life leech resistance doesn't protect against vitality attacks! Some monsters that doo vitality damage: Cyclops (they'll reduce your HP extremely much without vitality resistance. You'll meet one in at 1, few in Olympus mountain and two in act 4) Megalesios (act 1 end boss) Ormenos (telkine in act 3) Alastor (mid boss in act 1 in catacombs after Athens) Bandari (side quest boss in act 3, Chang'an) Hades (does tons of vitality dmg with all attacks)
