Short answer , it depends on your second mastery.

I don't like VO's "toss time" so I prefer Eruption.
On the other hand, I've got absolutely crap gear and no recharge increase, so I take VO as well just to cycle through spells. Basically it seems that once you have good recharge% you can concentrate on what you like.

Eruption has a longer cooldown, but does more damage as long as you have something (like a CD) to keep their attention on top of the flames.
VO has an unlimited cast range and does a ton of burst damage initially. Both are good. |

Eruption is extremely powerful and even a handful of points makes it useful through epic/legendary. In fact, until just yesterday, I was using it at base 5 ( base 4 with +1 skill) in legendary. If you lack a CD, you can just run around the eruption and the monsters will kill themselves on the proximal detonations.
Volcanic orb I find to be a little weak. I randomly respec out of it to try various spells such as chain lit, thunderball, etc. In fact, for almost all of my epic typhon farming runs I was using squall, thunderball and eruption. If you are pure earth, you will probably want to use both of those spells though, because without -recharge, the cooldown on eruption is too long. |

I was using flame spurt, but switched to VO after reading here. The lob time/aiming does take a bit of getting used to, but I can now successfully throw at a group of enemies hitting the first one or two then gleefully watching as the rest of the mob runs directly into the burst/projectiles.
Every time I use it, I can't help thinking to myself of the Holy Hand Grenade! King Arthur: Consult the Book of Armaments. Brother Maynard: Armaments, chapter two, verses nine through twenty-one. Cleric: [reading] And Saint Attila raised the hand grenade up on high, saying, "O Lord, bless this thy hand grenade, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy." And the Lord did grin. ![]()

I think where people have trouble killing with VO is when they neglect the physical side of damage. You would be surprised what a legendary raptor tooth relic in an amulet can do for VO and Eruption damage.
Eruption will usually kill anything no matter what with a lot of +Fire damage, but boosting the physical portion helps a lot against fire resistant monsters. |

Thanks Ion that's a handy tip.
