Default Character Design: Fat & Ugly

Is it just me?

I think the character is much too fat! I have absolute no chance to identify with him.

Are all Designers at Iron Lore fat and round?
Nope, i dont think so. Muscles are ok, but dont make these guys look fat!

Actually Lars, current research indicates that Roman gladiators were pretty well padded, both to increase their hitting power and to make their vitals harder to reach. The ripped dude with 3 percent body fat running around the Coliseum is a myth.

We also haven't seen the female avatar yet. Will you be complaining about an inability to identify with her as well?

Yeah, but as a (Fat/Bulky) American, I don't want to play as an emaciated looking European!

Just kidding! I actually like the buff gladiator look too!

Thumbs up the dude looks like a bouncer from a club it's OK to me

but if the female char is (and i quote) "fat american"-looking i'd have some trouble playing that char and not laugh.. or.. vomit.. i don't know..

the skinnier dude you suggested looks bad imo, he's got more of a sorcerer look to him, which makes him a bad 'all-over the skills spectrum' char.

and alefiend is right, usually gladiators would have a great feast at the night before the gladiator battles, and the banquet would be given by the host. glads were ment to get fat, they ate fat during training too. it was to avoid serious injuries with a naturally grown 'bodyarmor' (plus the bloodvessels would be deeper in the tissue too, deminishing the chance of a 'bleeding to death' wound)

Well, all these stereotypes aside (and usually there is little to be achieved with potentially insulting the developers), I did feel that the player character was a little too bulky. In D2, for example, I had never played a barbarian because I had trouble to identify myself with the very buff appearance of the character. Then again, I've yet to see what the TQ toon will look like with splendid and elaborate armour later in the game. He may look just fine then. offering different body styles at the point of character creation may address the issue, but the game is probably going gold soon, so it may be too late.

See, in D2 I always played as a Barbarian and hardly ever as anything else. I guess being 6-4 250lbs I relate more to that then the wormy little Necromancer. I think if you were looking for a perfect body type, to match it would be good to be able to adjust it manually, but oh well it looks like we are stuck with Maximus for the archetype.

I didn't even notice the body type/size. I do remember that someone posed the question to devs in another thread about whether or not it was to make the avatar look like their stats. I.E. if they put a ton of points in str, would they be some buff tank looking character. Unfortunately, I cannot remember what the devs said or what thread it were in.
I do like your idea though. Some insight into the difference between a warrior and a spellcaster...not bad at all.
