In the description for both my version and Bman's it's stated that that can happen by design....the game doesn't know what to do when you attempt to create the artifact and no ingredients are found, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Someday I'd like to get a fully working version created without that limitation, but I don't know if that'll ever happen.
Simply save before attempting to create your artifacts, and cross your fingers.
It won't hurt anything if it doesn't.
