Once you hit epic you can get wolves and whatnot back, but in order to beat Barmanu and Typhon (Two hard bosses toward the end of the game with deadly meteor shower attacks) I went petless for the last half of China, focusing the build on full Plague/Fatigue/Susceptibility and the standard 1 point in Stone Form with Eruption, Volativity, Earth Enchantment, and some Brimstone if desired to help Eruption deal with fire resistant mobs (like the fire sprites later on in the game). Keep in mind the Physical Damage bonus from Brimstone applies to the fragments thrown out by Eruption, as does (of course) the burn damage. Also, get just enough Regrowth to heal half your HP bar at any given time.

General strategy with the above build is to Plague mobs to pull them to you, and quickly cast eruption at your feet then quickly throw up stone form before the horde reaches you. This takes practice to perfect, but you can defeat huge groups of mobs in seconds using the strategy and it does work well vs the final bosses of the game, simply Plague > Eruption and run around, using Regrowth as necessary. Eventually your kiting technique will get good enough that you may not need to Stone Form all the time and just use Regrowth to top yourself off (since plagued mobs do very little damage if they do reach you, which rarely happens if you're on the ball).
